I've got an Alpha Chrony which I've been using to work up loads for over 3 years.  I load about 8 different rifle and pistol cartridges with  bullets from Nosler, Hornady, and Barnes.  Recently bought 1K 124 gr 9mm from Montana Gold.  They shot well, but I couldn't get velocities anywhere close to where they should be....They were consistently running 2 to 3 times higher than they should be.  I tried moving the Chrony from 5 to 12 feet from muzzle and tried with the diffusers both on and off, but still had the same results.  Thought the Chrony was going bad so pulled out 3 other loadings---115 gr 9mm XTP, 165 gr .30-06 Accubond, and 125 gr BLK SST.  Shot over the Chrony on the same day and all came in right where they had always been.  Figured that eliminated the Chrony as the problem, and left only the bullet.  The MG bullets are clearly much "brighter" in color and figured maybe that could be causing the problem.  Has anyone else experienced this problem with the MG bullets?  Was thinking that I could color the test bullets with a dark magic marker to see if I could get some accurate readings on my work-ups.  Any thoughts?  Thanks.

Yes using a black magic marker will help a chrony "see" the bullets better. Works for me whenever my Oehler 35p is having a few errors reading a speed.

Are you saying the readings are in the 3600fps?

No one ever marks up MG bullets at USPSA matches to shoot over the chrono... and they are VERY common bullets.

I never had a problem with the MG bullets that I've used.  I've only ever used their 147gr TMJ.

I've gotten readings as high as 3200 fps, but most were in 2400 to 2700 range.
