Using the Lee FCD. I tried to set it up as per the instructions in Baboo's tutorial.

One thing I noticed that seemed to differ from his, was that mine shows the gaps between the grippers the case. I didn't see that on his.

I backed off the crimper to just under a half-turn for #3. The other two were at just over half-turn as per his notes.

This is for plinking ammo for use in ARs. Brass is FC head stamp, untrimmed after first firing, all under 1.750. I had to give it a light chamfer and deburr to keep it from scraping the copper off the bullet. COAL is 2.220" (closer to 2.218, but I'll dial it in). Bullet is Hornaday 55 gr FMJ BT.

Any comments?

I would seat the bullet a little further so the crimp in the cannelure more. Don't worry about the gaps, they will not effect performance. Hard to tell from the pics but #2 looks like a good crimp. 3 looks to light, 1 would probably be ok.

I agree, seat them a little deeper.

I'm not a crimper myself but I do have some Remington Match ammo on hand that is crimped and it looks like your #2 crimp (with gaps).

If it helps..

I am looking at a Mil Surp IMI round that is very similar to the Remington pictured above.

I think if you want a more consistent crimp all in the same place you will have to trim them, unless the measured variation in length is very small.

I tend to crimp more like your #3.  For me, that's how I set it for my plinking and accuracy rounds.  The crimp you have in 1&2 is closer to factory ammo, but they crimp harder to prevent setback from harsh handling in autoloaders.  This may affect accuracy though, as it may be enough to deform the bullet.  If you really want to know what works, load up 10 identical rounds, powder charges weighed to .1 grains, then crimp 5 heavy and 5 light.  Fire them for grouping and let the rifle and paper tell you what works.

Mine also look closer to #3 and I agree with the others on seating a bit deeper. Here are how mine look when I roll crimp though on a 357 (only image I have off one of my reloads with a roll crimp)

Am I understanding you correctly in that you didn't trim your brass?

If so, that's gonna be a big problem.  The crimp die relies on all brass being the same length.

He's using the Lee Factory Crimp Die, which is not trim length dependent.  A major reason it's so popular.

To get rid of the gaps if they bother you just crimp and then turn the round a little and crimp again.

Case 2 has the bullet seated to the proper "mid cannelure" depth I like to crimp to.

Case 3 has the best crimp. Cases 1 and 2 are over crimped, but ok to shoot.

Case #3 is about the crimp I use on my 77 GR SMKs.
