i am trying to get  hold of some 77 grain smk's  and load them up, not really looking for "match" quality but from reading most people have said they prefer the heavy 77 grain bullet for "defensive" type situations.

so my question is when it comes to loading the 77 grain smk what is your data ? i would be running this threw an 11.5 so i will have some fps loss, do you crimp ?  dont you crimp ? fav powder ? i was looking into blc-2 or h-322 ? i think is what it is, would possibly look into that new cfe-223 as well if i can find it locally. i am also curious to know where i should be trying to push this bullet at for it to do its job ? 2700 fbs 2900 fps ??

What can you actually get for powder.  RL15 and varget go good.  I've just started working with CFE but in a 62.

The 75 and 77 gr bullets offer excellent ballistics at extended range with the bullet seated to fit in the magazine.  At longer ranges, it's not quite as good as the 80 gr SMK but the 80 grainer cannot be seated to magazine length.

For many, they use the 77 seated to magazine length for all their shooting, so they have only one load.

For a short barrel, the heavier bullets help extend the "effective range" of the platform as the heavyweight bullets retain their velocity better than the lighter ones. I've gotten to like Ramshot TAC for loading 77 grain bullets. As far as crimp goes, if you're not looking for match grade accuracy, then crimping just helps prevent bullet setback during chambering. From testing some Black Hills Mk 262 ammo through my 11.5" upper, I found it to average 2421 fps. Hopefully your barrel is at least a 1:8 twist to stabilize the bullet. 1:9 can be iffy, but I have seen them work.

Here's what one of my 77 grain Nosler loads did at 50 yards from my 14.5" upper.

My long range load is a 77gSMK with 23.0g of 8208XBR.  2735fps out of a 20" barrel and very happy with its accuracy.

You can't get the 75g Amax loaded to mag length, they're a long bullet.

FYI 75g A-Max can't be loaded to mag length. I don't use the 77 SMK, but I use the 77 Nosler CC and Hornady 75g BTHPs and love them in my AR and bolt gun.

2760 fps MV with same, only 23.5 gr., 1:8 twist.    That IMR 8208 XBR is turning out to be some very nice powder.

Next time I find some, I am going to buy it.

This is my load as well using either a Federal 205m or Wolf small rifle magnum primer.  I get an average velocity of 2580 fps out of my 16" barrel with an average SD of 9 and avg ES of 28.

I can get similar results with 21.8g of H322.
