| Hello I'm looking for the start and max loads for a 223 rem 55 fmjbt bullet with Varget, cfe223, and IMR4198. I have the data from the Hogdgon data center for the 55gr SPR SP but I would really like more accurate data for the different profile bullet. Thanks for any and all replies! |

I have the data from the Hogdgon data center for the 55gr SPR SP but I would really like more accurate data for the different profile bullet. Thanks for any and all replies! That is about as good as it gets. My Hornady manual has one set of data for ALL the 55s as do my 4 to 5 other manuals. It does give COAL for each but not specific load data. I'm not saying specific data does not exist but for "regular" bullets it will be hard to find. I say regular because there is specific data for bullets like the Barnes that are not of what we call conventional design (copper jacket / lead core). Use the start load from Hodgdon and work up from there. The max is really a reference anyway. Use it that way. Chances are you will either find you best accuracy or start to get pressure signs when you get into the listed max area. |

You seldom find data for the exact component combination you have. That is why a "start" load is given. "start" load is the lowest powder charge listed. So use the 55 gr bullet you have with the 55 gr bullet data shown. Begin loading at the "start" load and work up a load watching for pressure signs. This is the standard way to safely work up a load.

21 grains 4198 with 55 fmj works great in my carbine length, but not at all in a rifle length gas system. With cfe223 i use 27 grains in both. +1 on 21grs IMR 4198 with 55gr bullet in carbines. My Bushie M4 loves the load, but "regular" length gas systems have problems due to fast burn rate not giving correct pressure at gas port. |
| There really isn't a quick way to get perfection unfortunately. You may be able to skip a couple of the lower rungs of your work up ladder by using someone else's data, but you could also miss the best combo for your rifle by doing so. I feel your pain because I don't have access to a range less than an hours drive from me and I usually just use the family one (3 hrs away) but I keep plugging away at the best load and use patience in between trips. |
