I'll be the first to admit that I know nothing about chronographs, but today I find myself in search of one. I'm work on a .22 suppressor project (http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_6_20/405896_New_project_time______Form_1_style_this_time.html) and need to chronograph a bunch of ammo at different barrel lengths to find what length barrel will give me consistent sub-sonic shots. |

I have the Chrony which does its job...
The one that most interests me however is this one: http://www.magnetospeed.com |

Depends on what you are going to use the MV info on i.e. how precise/accurate it needs to be and of course how much money you have to spend. Most people use the shooting chrony, they work but not super accurate since the distance between the detector screen is only 1’. A super accurate chrony would be the Oleher 35P with three detectors spread 2’ apart each and gives you two reading to compare – around $600. Some people like the CED since it does not require sunlight and use infra-red. A new type would be the magnetospeed which straps on the barrel and so no need to setup in front of the shooting stand. Some concern as it does involve putting something with weigh on the barrel and can at the very least change POI. No easy answer but a few to ponder over. |

Bang for the buck - pro chrono
Best chrono < $200 CEDs are often used in competitions, but they aren't foolproof and have their share of issues if you research enough. The Pro Chrono and CEDs often measure very closely to each other. Shooting Chrony doesn't have a great rep with the heavy competition guys. Take all opinions for as much as you paid for them, of course...then go get the Pro Chrono, unless looking to really drop some $ on one. ;) |
