I have a few concerns about plated bullets. I bought some Berry's Preferred plated bullets in small quantities to try out. I got them in 115g 9MM and 165g 40/10. I'll be shooting these out of a Glock19 (9MM) and a Springfield XDM (40S&W). I usually shoot FMJ bullets for targets and have my dies set for them.
Right now the powder die is set for a 0.001 flare on the case mouth. Am I going to have to open that up more for the plated bullets? Also, am I going to have any issues shooting the 9MM plated bullets out of my G19? I know cast bullets are a no no in Glocks. Basically I'm looking for a cheaper way to reload my practice rounds without going to lead cast bullets. I already know the charge data will be different for plated bullets VS FMJs. |
SWThomas- I have been shooting Berry's plated 115 grain bullets out of my Glock 19 for a number of years now with no ill effects. My dies are set the same way you'd set them for any FMJ bullet. I'm careful about not making the round too 'hot' as per Berry's recommendations. They have on their website an FAQ section that will answer your questions about their plated bullets. | Berry's 147's are plenty accurate in my G17 but not in my G34 (factory barrels). 4 inch or so groups offhand at 20 yards with the 17 but mostly minute-of-IDPA-target buckshot patterns with the 34 at the same distance. About 2 out of 10 actually tumble in my G34. Load is 3.3 gr TiteGroup in mixed brass. Said all that to say this - you won't know 'til you try 'em. Make sure you just close the bell on the cases - do not overcrimp. Back when I bought these Berry's 147's, the difference between them and jacketed was pretty substantial. Now - not so much. My solution with my 34 was to buy a cheap Lone Wolf replacement barrel. It shoots those same loads into 3 inches or so offhand at 20 yards. I'm sure it would do much better off a rest. More than accurate enough for IDPA and 3-gun. |

That's what most of us are doing. The rule of thumb is use data for lead bullets of similar type. Your plated bullets should run like jacketed, back off the jacketed loads a little bit at first. |

I've had very good accuracy (at 25 yards) with Berry 9mm 115gr plated bullets out of the Lone Wolf barrel in my Glock 17, not so good accuracy with the Berry's 115s out of the original Glock polygon rifling barrel.
Out of my Glock 35, once again Berry bullets are accurate out of the 40cal Lone Wolf barrel I installed in it but with the original Glock barrel Berrys plated would barely stay on paper at 25 yards. |
