| ok,i recently bought a dillon 550...i still have my old single stage press.i have 2500 pcs of 223/556 that need reloaded...ive tumbled it all, ground out 1000 primer pockets that are lc brass.i think about half of all the brass needs to be trimmed...so this is where im confused...do i run the brass thru my single stage press with the sizing die first so i can trim it?if thats the case, when i go to load it on the dillon do i resize it again in station 1?i was thinking it had to be sized before it could be trimmed? |

I use a 550 to prep my brass but the process is the same for any progressive. I have a toolhead that deprimes, then sizes and trims with a 1200 trimmer. Then i open the neck with a lyman M die. That all happens on one toolhead. Then I tumble and swage off the press.
Finally run your regular loading toolhead with a universal decapper in the first position to make sure there is no media in the flash hole. I believe the two toolhead method is the most efficient way to do rifle brass on regular (non-1050) progressive presses. |

When you load bottleneck rounds on a progressive, it's a 2 step process. Case prep, then loading. Case prep; tumble clean cases lube and size. I do this on my Rockchucker, but you can use the 550 for this if you want. tumble off lube trim if needed debur remove primer crimp if needed Loading; Now cases are progressively loaded with 550 no die needed on station 1 I normally run a Lee decapping die here to knock out any media in flashole. |
| Buy some extra heads off eBay for the dillon 550. I keep one with a lee decapper- multiple uses in different cases. Tumble for an hour to clean. Resized, trim, debur. I unscrew my factory crimp die and run all the cases through the progressive. Tumble. Then load with the factory crimp die screwed back in. |
