I was forming some 223 and apparently didn't lube enough. A case got stuck and the rim torn off. I removed the decapper expander rod and used my 300BLK chopsaw to cut the case loose. I wasn't careful enough and knurled the rod slightly.

I reassembled the die and sized a couple more cases, checking headspace. I noticed the necks were looking funny. The ones on the left were before the stuck case and the ones on the right were after.

I thought it could be due to the damaged rod, so I ordered a new one from Lee. I set the die back up and I'm still having the same problem. The shoulders on both pairs are showing 1.465" +/- 0.001". Did I lose a piece of the die? What could I be doing wrong? I'm sure I'll feel like a jackass when I find out.

Clean the neck of the die with some strong copper solvent and a brass brush, looks like you have some brass galled in the neck of the die.

Did you set the FL die up correctly?  Looks to me as if the die is not screwed into the press far enough.

Screw in till it touches the shell holder plus 1/4-1/3 more into the press.

I agree. It looks like the die needs to be set deeper for full length sizing.

I tried both suggestions and it seems to be working now. I'll just have to reset the shoulder bump when take new fired brass measurements [and write them down this time]. Two steps forward, one step back...or maybe in this case 2 back and 1 forward.
