First of all, I am new to reloading.  I have the Lee Deluxe Carbide 4-Die Set for 9mm.  I have polished, de-primed and sized the brass.  Also, I have cleaned out the primer pockets.  My question is: how do you know how far/much to expand the brass for 9mm bullets?  The instructions with the die set say "no more than necessary".  I do not know what "no more than necessary" should be.  I am using Remington 9mm (.355 Dia.) 115 Grain Full Metal Jacket bullets.  Thanks in advance for any advice.

You want to set the expander die to bell the case mouth just enough the bullet will sit there without falling off as it moves to the next station and isn't shaved by the case mouth when the bullet is seated.

Just barely flared.  To check whether it's too much, run the case into the seater die to find out if it drags.  There's no need to do that on the press, use your hands so you can feel the case in the die.

This is an adjustment that includes some personal preference.  Use what works for you.

When setting up the die, I try to get too little flare- it's easy to tell if there isn't enough flare. Then, Increase the bell in small amounts, until the bullet can sit in the case.

Thanks for the input guys.  I will now see if I can seat some bullets without screwing up.  Again, thanks for all the input.

9mm works just like 45 ACP in this pic. Left sized case, center belled case, right belled case with bullet sitting on top of mouth.

The reason to not over bell is that the case mouths will crack sooner due to over working the brass.

Some numbers with the Win cases I'm using. Another brand might have different numbers.

Case mouth before sizing .380-384.

After sizing .375.

After belling .382.

After crimping .376.

Good luck.

dryflash3, thanks for the info.  About 75% of the cases I have are Win.  I definitely feel more confident now having specific numbers to work with.  I appreciate the help.

Wow you go through a lot more trouble than I do with 9mm.  I always just deprime, size, prime again then drop the powder right, seat a bullet and factory crimp it.  All in one shot.
Anyways about your question, you only need enough flare so loading is easy and there are not any shavings as you seat the bullet.  The shavings part is most important but I like enough flare to make loading easy ... ie quicker / more reliable bullet seating, less bullet fumbling as I am seating them.
