It was a wonderful day here in the St. Louis area, so I went out and enjoyed the range.

Came back with a lot of spare brass

New AR owners, with ammo to shoot, and they don't mind leaving it all for me! (They might need to get their guns running better, every one of the 90 I picked up are dented from the brass deflector, and these are the worst casemouths after sorting and shining them up)

Is this a 40 Super I see?

Even in today's market, I'd toss out some of those that look like they have creases. Generally, I'll take a bic pen and stick in point first into the case and it will round them out, then size them and load them. If there is a sharp crease I toss them though.

I watched a couple of young guys and their girlfriends, early 20s,  shooting one day about a year and a half ago, and they were just blowing through a case of Federal 5.56. Just blasting, a whole case. I got to talking to them when one of the guys asked me about my 6.8. When they were getting ready to leave, they showed no indication of picking up the brass, so I asked if they sell it, and they said I could have it. I tried to give them some money but they wouldn't take it. Real nice kids, polite and all, military from down at Ft. Jackson. They even helped me pick it up. I got over 950 pieces from them. There was another hundred or so that I picked up as well. We were the last to leave and it was getting dark.

I pick up everything now, used to be I might leave .223/5.56 on the ground if it was only a hundred or so, or if the range was busy. Not now.

Now I'll fight you over my 6.8 brass.

Man I see even new guys picking up their brass now too.

Headstamp is 45 ACP

Looks intentional, and I don't have a 9mm stuck in it

I have some round pliers from a jewelry/metalsmithing class, they seem to round the mouths out pretty well, ended up with 6 - 300 Blackout candidates.  One of the rejects had a big crack around the base of the bottleneck too.. thats why we look at them right?

Looks like this is it. I have a collection of brass that I have picked up over the years, so I would save it.

The 40 super had a longer case and was made from 45 WM brass.

I use dented cases like that to make 300BLK.

AFAIK, that .45 case could be the old ".45-38" idea that came out of the early 80s for use in USPSA (ipsc) - it was a necked-down .45 case made to use the then-common .357 Magnum bullets.

EDIT:  looks like it was called the ".38/.45 Clerke"  - and its invention went back EVEN FURTHER - to the early 1960s - before "IPSC" was created in the mid 1970s:

Can't find brass anywhere nor a decent catcher so the old man and I designed and fabricated a few top notch brass catchers for the AR's.

That said when I'm at the range during cleanup of my area I just bag everything and sort what I need when home.

Brass is just the new gold, hard hard gold.

Picked up just shy of 1000 federal 7.62x39 casings last week from some new AK owner. Wish I wouldnt have sold mine last year! >.<

Honestly I just wanted to find that fifteenth 45 acp I had shot out of the new xds.. Ended up walking down the whole pistol range collecting a full jean pocket of brass. The last 45 was sitting next to my car lol (and I found a good 30 more too, xds leaves a rather distinct mark on the primers)

This is a bit coincidental...

I was at the range on Saturday, and found a few of those myself.  Also necked-down Fiocchi .45 ACP cases.  But I'm at least a thousand miles away from you...

Can't ever bee too sure. I found these on Sunday, so it could have been the same bandits! Though mine were full of water and it stopped raining early on Sunday.

I went to our local range yesterday, and it was obvious that I was the first reloader to arrive after the snow melted.  There was an awesome selection of pistol brass to be had.  Over 200 .45 acp and twice that in 9mm.  I left the pile of .40 for someone else.  Also lots of mousegun brass on the rifle range, but no thirty caliber (dang it).  I love newbies who leave their brass.
