well i finally pulled my head out of my ass today and ordered a Giraud trimmer from Doug...or i should say Doug's wife? since
Doug was at his day job? DAY JOB? wtf? why isnt he building trimmers full time? two months behind and at about five hundred a pop i know what i would be doing full time unless he is an areo space engineer or something pulling in big six figures?? anyway, been talking with him for several months about the trimmer and stuff and if i would have ordered it when i first started talking with him i would have had it already. oh well, at least its ordered and i cant wait for the day when i can say 'its here'! |
|
i was going to take a picture of the 20,000 rounds i got in yesterday from my supplier to show everyone why i need a Giraud so bad.
just kidding, well i did get in the 20K of brass but it went out the door just as fast fulfilling all my orders. but once i get the Giraud i plan to offer some finished brass for sale at a premium price and i figured since its so fast it would make it an easy chore trimming! i bought a Thumblers tumbler to do my personal brass but might get one of those Harbor freight cement mixers to tumbler big loads of brass. |
|
congrats on your purchase and welcome to the club :-)
You will LOVE it..... If you know how to set your headspace and keep it pretty consistent in all your brass (which is what should be occuring anyhow) then this trimmer is a no brainer due to the time savings alone. |
| Get your self a good set of light weight gloves other wise you will get sore thumbs! Than you will have to get the technique down. I alternate with using both hands. Trim with right hand, pick up a piece of brass with left hand, drop brass trimmed brass from right hand in finished box while trimming brass that is left in left hand. Goes pretty fast. |

Guy on a local CO forum just started doing it. Looks like a time saver for the Bulk processor. He is going to reduce dish soap accordingly. http://www.ar-15.co/threads/95625-the-cement-mixer-experiment |
| I use gloves made by a company called Hy-Flex and they come in various sizes. I use size 8 which fit my small hands snug. They are lightly rubber dipped on the fingers and palms of the gloves to grip the cases really well.....will reduce the chances of blisters greatly. |

I believe his website says he is an engineer for a gun company if I recall right. |

i still have another month before mine is ready to ship but i called and asked if i could pay for it right now so im
not broke next month when they call so im mailing out a check today. cause the way my luck goes something will break down around here next month and cost a lot to get repaired so i figured while i have extra in my bank account i will get it paid for now. |

I don't know how you could tell with such a crappy picture. |

Quoted: Love mine- use it for 5.56, .30-'06, and .50BMG. Since I put lock rings on the conversions it's a cinch to switch calibers. What size lock rings do I need? I've ordered the Giraud and a few different caliber conversions, so this sounds like something I need to try. |

I knew I should've added some more lock rings to my last Midway order, unfortunately the 6 packs of Hornady lock rings were out and I didn't want to pay extra to buy them single. |

While I agree it does more than an o.k. job, my brass don't turn out quite like That |

This thread did it for me - just ordered the trimmer with a few extra cutter heads and case holders.
Setup for .308, case holder for .30-06, case holder and cutter for .223 and .458 SOCOM. Looks like I'll just be loading pistol until August. But it'll be here in time for one helluva brass prepping winter. And maybe by then I'll actually get some rifle powder. Ah yeah! Good times ahead, brothers. |
| I ordered mine about 2 weeks ago and she told me they are about 3 months out.no sweat for me as im not in too much of a rush to start anyways but Mrs. Giraud is so damn nice, i work a night shift and called her when i got off( 7am) thinking i was gonna leave a message and she would call back later and she answered! Felt realyl bad but she was very nice and asked what i did for a living and explained everything to me. Seriously made a customer for life. |
|
Quoted: Does the .223 brass always come out looking that clean as far as the cut / chamfer? I hate the manual trimmers and the inconsistent deburring. Congrats on getting yours OP. Mine has been chamfering the inside of the case neck lop-sided (as set per Giraud). Guess I'm gonna have to do some adjusting of my own. |

Quoted:
Trimmer works better if cases are trimmed vertically. If you trim horizontal, the brass chips will foul the case holder pretty fast. yeah, thats a good tip and will be doing it. i also have to retract my previous statement and say that i do need to move the cutter as it just doesnt completely trim the O.D. of the case. hope its not rocket science and i mess it up? |

Either leave it alone or follow Doug's instructions.
Adjust the blade by wiggling a case from inside the case holder. Move it very little. I found I can't get it right by moving the blade with my finger. If like me you find this impossible, call and ask if you can send in the cutter and a trimmed case you don't like. I suspect Doug will readjust for you. Good luck. |
|
i adjusted my cutter so it chamfers inside and out equally but for some reason the inside chamfer is lop-sided?
one half is cut nice but the other half is untouched for some reason? i wish i could take a picture but my camera is crap for macro. im just curious what would cause it? |
|
no offense but thats pretty obvious to turn the case, i even try and tilt it a little when im spinning the case.
its not a super big deal but it would just be nice to have an even chamfer all the way around. would it be possible that the cutter was ground wrong? i could try turning it 120* and use a new edge to see if it helps? |

Quoted:
If the case is not perfectly concentric, how can the trimmer cut it perfectly even. Use a Q tip and whatever lube you use, lube the inside necks of 10 cases, then 10 the way you normally lube them, then trim and report back do you mean to lube them and then size? what good would lubing and then trimming do? |

How True Oops, Yes size them. Inside necks, lubed and not, then size them. Then trim, see if there is any difference,if using a die with a sizing button, dont Jank (jerk-yank) it through, not saying you do. |
|
hard to say if he would do a group rate but it never hurts to ask?
anyway, i lubed the inside necks and resized 'again' but it didnt help. the O.D. is perfectly concentric on the chamfer but the I.D. is lopsided/off center? i wish i had a decent camera (well i do but its not worth a shit at macro or im doing it wrong) but i cant get a good pic of brass up close. i guess i will just have to live with it? but i should email doug and see if has heard this problem before. |
