10mm thread turned out to be a hoax and called for it.
setback a myth |

If problem was factory loads, why is thread cross posted here? Reloaded rounds, sure. That issue didn't seem to be defined in the thread. Please share reason for posting. Making a safety point? ![]() With the amount of damage to hand, there's no question what happened. Case was severely overcharged. Factory cartridge or reload this is a reminder of liabilities that lay in wait for us all if we let our guard down for a second. Here's another link that's a must read. Compliment of Eric10mm. .40 S&W, hammer induced setback. |

1911smith, The link above goes to the hammer induced story. Would like to see the 10mm thread if you can fix the link. Thanks! |

The only picture in that link is of an intact hand holding some jacked up rounds. Is the hammered round thread linked above the hoax? I'm very confused... |

What is going on in this thread? What is it all about? What is the answer? Question was never asked, no answer needed. This is an information for you thread. I assisted last summer with a claim. Pistol was G21, ammunition Aguila. Pistol had experienced a catastrophic case failure. I thought it a little odd in .45acp so my interest peaked. End result was Centurian paid $700.00 reimbursement for Glock and 200 rounds of Aguila .45acp. This was a Gen 3 Glock and being so had adequate chamber support, so Glock denied claim saying this was an ammunition issue, possibly due to setback. This is where my interests came to play and started making calls. Quite a bit of online research was done, 12 cartridges were sent to me for inspection. Making a long story short I found charges to have almost 4/10ths grain variance. Variance by itself wouldn't have caused case head seperation or case wall blow out ? Both Hodgdons and Sierra were called. I got quite an education in the process, part of it I'm sharing with you. Both companies say setback in a pistol cartridge, being an only factor will not blow out a case or chamber. Other things we discussed were inadequate chamber support, inertial sling, fouled barrels and weak recoil springs. These were not issues the G21 suffered. Setback being ruled out, mechanical condition of the weapon dismissed we were left with powder weight variances but variances this small wouldn't cause this failure. What's left ? Both Hodgdons and Sierra state, mechanical condition of weapon and case condition being right. The only causes for catastrophic case failures are wrong powder and severe overcharges, like double charges. Playing a hunch I suggested powder burn rate was at question. If burn rate was hot, variances would then come to factor. When the words non-cannister grade powder were mentioned, lot testing, third party testing and load work up for new lots were mentioned, Centurian admitted to having multiple quality control issues and a check was cut. Timeline from event to settlement was almost two months. Setback as an issue still wasn't a hundred percent dismissed in my mind until finding linked article. In my mind at least this issue is closed. Would I suggest caution where setbacks concerned ? Yes. Setback is a product of inadequate or lost neck tension, inertial sling and barrel fouling are issues that concern me. So my studies continue as these are things that keep me up at night.
