So I have several different brands of powder for the AR platform as I wanted to test each out and see what I liked best.

If I open several different containers to run test loads, how long will they keep and does opening them start to 'spoil' them? I may decide I like a particular version and want to set the others back to the side in the event one day I have a need for just anything that goes poof.

Research shows how to store it and what conditions to avoid, the smell and look of bad powder, but i'm not coming across anything that says just how long it can typically last.

I've got containers that have been unsealed for up to five years. I'm in the process of working those out. Down to a few cannisters of Hodgdons Clays and TiteGroup. These being powders I no longer have use for.

DC.

My dad gave me some partial pounds of powder that were opened over 15 years prior, they still looked good & had the sweet lacquer thinner smell, used it up with no problems.

Store your powder in the original container with the lid on tight, keep it in the lowest humidity & best temperature controlled place you reasonably can & it should last a long time.

the powders he gave me were IMR in tin containers with little red screw on caps, I just went and looked at them... still smell like lacquer thinner & still dark grey / black in color.

price tag on one says Longs Drug $14.99

How old are you?
I have powders older than you if you're 50 and they're still good.

I've kept a number of old cans - including the short squat ones, contained Unique, Bullseye, 2400, etc. Also old black powder, as well as those of Dupont. Probably should go to EE and see if anyone wants them.
