So I've been researching reloading 30-06 and 30-30 is the only difference a lighter weight and flat nose for the 30-30 of a 308 bullet?

Thanks
Rick

Both bullets are the same diameter.308.

30-30 bullets will have a crimping cannelure and be designed to expand at a lower velocity than the run of the mill 30 caliber bullet used in 30-06.

Not 100% sure what you mean. Yes they both use .308 caliber bullets, they both use large rifle primers, and depending on bullet weights may use some of the same powders, the similarities pretty well end there. The 30-30 typically uses lighter bullets to attain respectable velocity with its dramatically reduced powder capacity vs. 30-06. The 30-30 will typically be loaded with round or flat nosed bullets due to the majority of firearms chambered for it having tubular magazines. The 30-06 can shoot any .308 caliber bullet, and will send it out considerably faster than the 30-30 will.

So a light crimp with a bullet that has a crimping cannelure?

For a tubular magazine, yes.
For a box magazine, not necessary. Your choice. For Service Rifle (M1, M14, or M16), I have never crimped.

For the 30-30 yes.

For the 30-06 its generally not needed but if you are loading the 06' ammo for use in a auto loader it can't hurt. But if you do make sure you work your load up with the crimped ammo. Crimping an existing load will in effect change that load. It may be slight or very noticeable but it will be different.
