New to AR's as my father just gave me an AR-15 556. With the way things are going we thought it would be best to start reloading ourselves so my question is this: What primers are there that we can use? He is under the impression that the CCI #41's are the only safe ones to use.

Semi auto rifles take a primer that is less sensitive to protect against slam fire.

I use CCI #41, (as you stated) but Federal 205MAR small rifle match are also specific for ar

Remington 7 1/2 small rifle benchrest are also less sensitive and usable.

Thanks

In a bolt gun?  For 223 use any SMALL RIFLE PRIMER you wish.  I have an AK in 223 with a SPRING LOADED FIRING PIN.  I use any small primer I wish.

Your AR-15 has a floating firing pin with NO spring.  Next time you are at the range, fire a few rounds, then take an unfired round out of the chamber.  Notice the dent in the unfired primer?  THAT is why reloaders avoid the softest, most sensitive rifle primers:  standard Federal small rifle primers.  Even with standard Federals, you will probably be fine.

Only ONE other caution here:  the Russian Tula or Wolf primers are great.  BUT for some odd reason, certain Wolf or Tula primers do not work well with Winchester 355 ball powder or the military pull down equivalent. Hang fires result.

Keep the questions coming.

With proper case headspace and primer seating depth you can use whatever primer you want in an AR, assuming your loads are safe and chamber headspace is correct. Let the flaming begin!

I bought a thousand of the "400" primers and have had no problem with the first 800. I load to normal velocities and have never had a pierced primer in 40 years. The only slam fire I have ever had was with an M1 with Frankford Arsenal Match ammo.

I have used regular Federals for quite some time now. This whole "slam-fire" campaign is BS.
