Hello, I am not new to reloading but just recently received my own RCBS kit after using a friends kit for a couple years. I was priming some AE 223 brass with CCI small rifle primers with the hand primer and I ran into a bit of a problem. The first two seemed harder than normal to seat but they seated fine. The third one however was way to hard and when I took out the shell holder it looked like this.

Im not sure how well you can see it but below the FC 11 there is a sliver of primer about 1/8" tall which is preventing me from getting it out of the shell holder. What could I do to get it out of the shell holder? Could I put it into my press and decap it very gently? Should I get a primer pocket uniformer to help prevent this from happening in the future? Does it matter that I am using Hornady shell holders with the RCBS hand primer? I have not had this happen with my friends kit I was using in the 2 years I was using it. Thanks,
dogman

You need to remove the military crimp.  You can deprime the live primer easily, just go slow.

Correct to both of these. Wear eye protection.

Go up to Tutorials and read the 4 part "223 reloading" posts. Will explain primer crimp and how to remove it.

That is the best description AND picture I have ever seen of why the primer crimp should be removed

I'm pretty sure "FC 11" is XM193, which would have the crimp.  I could be wrong, though.

I'm probably going to catch a ton of heat over this but I, for nearly five decades, used CCI primers for nearly all my reloads.

Then I found a reloading component dealer and his wife who are great people and all they carrried was Winchester primers so I thought I'd try them.

WAY harder than the standard CCI, IMHO, (never tried the military CCI primer) but I've had much better results with the WIN's.

Not going to replace the need to remove primer crimps though.

I'm just saying that photo looked like some of the CCI's I seated in regular cases with the same effort I used on WIN's w/o any problem...go figure.

This is why you should have all the tools listed on the Recommended List so you can handle any situation as they arise.  Have a stuck case remover handy as well
