As I said in an earlier topic, I've reloaded Pistol Ammo for years, I'm stating to reload Rifle Ammo, Primarily 300 Blk, I'm using once fired Brass, Cleaned ,sized and primed.

When I expand the case neck, How much is acceptable, Just enough to get the bullet started as with pistol ammo, I'll be using the Nosler 125gr Boattail.

I know this is a newb question, so take pity on me.

What are you using to "expand" the case neck with? Why are you expanding the case neck?

99.9% of all jacketed bottle neck rifle bullets are seated without any neck expanding. 100% of boat tail bullet are seated without neck expanding.

Some guys will put a little flair on but that is not the norm.

Please explain more.

Thanks Motor1, Like I said, I did pistol ammo for years, mostly .45, and we flared the neck, I'm new to bottle neck Rifle rounds, I'll be using Hornady dies and was not sure if I needed to flare the case mouth.

I'll asume then, that I will run the case through the sizing die and thats it, Drop Pwder charge and seat Bullet.

Exactly. Now an exception to that is if you were seating cast bullets in a case. That is a whole 'nother ball of wax, as they say. For standard FMJ bullets you should be fine.

With bottle neck rifle rounds, you don't expand the case neck like a straight wall pistol case.

What you should do is chamfer the inside of the neck and debur the outside. Will make bullet seating easy.

Do this after trimming (if needed).

Use your fingers to guide the bullet as the ram inserts the case and bullet into the bullet seating die.

Move your fingers away before they get pinched, but by then the bullet will be guided by the seating die.

You would only expand the neck if you were loading cast bullets.

M die can be set to just kiss rifle neck, creating an ever so slight flare to make seating flat base bullets easier. Ever so slight meaning .001 or .002 flare and again about .002 deep. Seating die closes this back up.

Sir, I'm going to disagree slightly with what the others have posted.  As you know pistol cartridge cases are flared to facilitate the seating of the bullet and the flare is removed when the bullet is seated and crimped.  Rifle cases are not usually expanded for this purpose but it really depends on the relative diameters of the inside diameter of the case neck and the outside diameter of the bullets you intend to use.  I've never reloaded for 300 Blk but from my experience with some other cartridges I've found that having a case neck inside diameter between .002" and .003" less than the bullet OD is just about optimum and is adequate neck tension for most semi auto gas operated rifles.  I use a Sinclair case neck expander mandrel before bullet seating to ensure the ID of the resized case I'm about to seat a bullet into is within the dimensions I have cited.  Again the point of expanding the case neck is to ensure it is the desired diameter not to facilitate the seating of the bullet.  JMHO, 7zero1.
