| I am thinking about getting into reloading slugs for 3gun. My olld man has an old lee load all. Where can I find slugs for reloading. How much does it usually cost to get into casting? |
| Haven't done any casting myself but would recommend Lyman's Shotshell manual as it has data for their slugs. You can buy the Lyman slug mold to cast the slugs they use in their manual. Use the exact components and data in the manual. Another good source for learning to load slugs is BPI Ballistic Products. They have slug manuals, several different slugs, and all the tools you would need. You would need to use mostly their components to load from their manual but their manual does have some data for Lyman cast slugs. |

I cast and reload slugs. I use the Lyman sabot slug, and it is loadable on the same equipment as shot shells (not a special roll crimp). The mold itself is a bit pricey, $80 plus: http://www.lymanproducts.com/lyman/bullet-casting/mould-details-shotgun.php?entryID=86
However, the slugs are capable of being loaded to whatever speed you need. At a slug that is accurate at 75 yds is about all you will probably run into and the speed most hunting slugs are pushed to is superfluous for 3-gun. I got started loading these slugs by buying them already cast, but the guy I was buying from quit casting them so I jumped in and stated to do it myself. |

Buying slugs almost cost as much as buying a box at Walmart? Looks like I should look into casting my own. Looks like I can get a hotplate and an old pan and go to town eh? If you want to get your feet wet a little at a time, you can make plinking slug loads out of regular 1oz target loads. Link to video |
