Has anyone every had a digital caliper fail to give consistent readings?

I'm starting to suspect mine. As a security check I'm re-zeroing before each measurement now.

But I wonder if erratic numbers is more likely the calipers versus the dies and machine...

Never had that kind of problem.  Might change your batteries and make sure the contacts are clean, if you haven't already.  Otherwise, I'd contact the manufacturer.

At work we're allowed 60 days and they have to be sent out for recalibration, you can get a calibration gauge to test with , IIRC it's to be used at a set temperature . that said I think that would be extreme

Mine gets goofy readings when the batteries are about to go, but it's pretty obvious cause it's way off.

Nothing wrong with the re-zero you are doing, but you will want at least one other point greater than zero to check the scale.
For example, a gage block, gage pin, or some known reference. As a last resort, you can select a bullet when you are desperate. For Example....  A 30 cal bullet should read close to .308 +/-.001 or you should worry about the caliper.

Calipers are not expensive, so if they quit on you it shouldn't break your bank to replace them.

First thing to check is the battery.

If it`s a cheap one (uder$60) that`s more then likely the problem. I know because I have one ($29). My machinest friend has one that`s  old &  tells the truth  everytime. Corse, he paid over $100 for it 18 years ago. Yes he  does put new batteries  in it once & awhile.

If the caliper has been dropped it's possible the rack and pinion is kerput.

Step #1 check the battery.
Step #2 Buy a DIAL caliper.

I have had cheaper calipers not pass inspection at work.  They were the harbor freight digital calipers.
Also, if you are having to re-zero so often like that, something is definately wrong.
