Hi. I just was given a box of ammo. 17 rounds in an old case-gard plastic case. It looks like the 30-06 except shorter. The case head is stamped L C 7 3 and has a small circle with an x in it. No other markings.

I'm thinking it's .308

Any help would be greatly apreciated !
Can't add pics..... Will keep trying.

EDIT: I have  photobucket/imageshack/tinypic accounts. The trouble is this site. I may have to change my preferences. Looking on the tech board now....

Lake City 1973 production as far as the case goes,, the "+" in the circle says it good old 7.62x51.

Good golly man, how many loads did you get out of those before the mouths split?

The plastic case they are in makes me think they are handloads.

They are HP. So yeah, I was thinking that they are reloads as well. I just built a .308 and need to test fire it before I can tear it down and refinish it.  This will fill that ticket. I'll just go one round at a time....

That was a pic of a funshow freebe. Box of reloads I broke down.

Three of the loaded rounds had split necks out of the 35 or so rounds.

Pic is from an old post (2008 or so) about not shooting unknown hand loaded ammo.

If this ammo does not have any loading data on the box, I wouldn't fire them.

Properly loaded rounds will have load data in/on the box.

I'd be reeeeeeeeeeeeal careful shooting some mystery handloads. God knows how they're loaded. Before I knew better my dad had me shooting my great granddads 30-06 with a box of rounds he had reloaded 20 or 30 years before and they made the factory hunting loads feel like .22LR's by comparison. They didn't blow the rifle up that day, but looking back I probably should have kicked my dad.

Just gotta make sure it works. One round loaded at a time. Leather gloves. Full face helmet. Welding apron. What could go wrong  ? ? ? ?

If you're lucky, nothing. If you're not you are going to need a new rifle. If you are really unlucky you may have bits of brass, bolt, receiver, and stock embedded in your hands and arms (right through those leather gloves if it KB's badly). The protection for your face depends on the shape and design of the helmet. Maybe you're ok, maybe you're wearing an eyepatch and dressing as a pirate for the rest of your Halloweens. You'd have to get a parrot though.

Odds are probably on your side, but is it really worth saving the $10-15 for a box of Rem UMC or Federal AE? Hell I'd buy a box of factory just to not look like a wanna be bomb squad guy. Nothing builds confidence in the people around you like looking as if you expect the rifle to explode.

I'm not much of a runner. I'd ask him to wait while I got my camera and some cover though!

Really ? That's all you've got to add...... Wait. You're right. I was looking for a few rounds to test fire and went the cheap route. I'm pretty sure they would be okay. AND I'm pretty sure I would live through it. BUT. I've put alot of time and money into this rifle. I want to give it to my dad for father's day. I'll go and buy a box over the counter at the gun shop. Anyone want 17 rounds of questionable ammo ?

I'd pull 'em, chuck the powder, weigh and try to identify the bullets, and reload them on my own, if I were you.
