So I just got home and while culling through my range pickups, Im finding a bunch of cases that look like they have zebra stripes! Mostly 9mm and a few 5.56/.223 cases. What causes this? Ok to reload or off to the scrap bucket?

fluted chamber. I think HKs have them?

This.

HK's leave that telltale mark.

They reload just fine.

Great! I hate to waste good brass. Why would it be on the .223?

HK93 would be the most common rifle that would do that.

That depends.  Can you physically feel the flutes?

I have a CETME that physically grooves the brass, and it has to be culled.

I only shoot steel .308 out of that rifle anymore.

Doesn't matter if it leaves a physical groove or not. I have reloaded tons of 5.56 with deep HK flute marks, and some 9mm.

This stuff is perfectly fine to use.

I believe LaRue's 308's also have fluted chambers now, FWIW. What other guys have said, if there are no physical defects (deep scratches, etc.) on the cases, reload them.

the HK 90-series semi-auto imports (HK91, HK93, HK94/SP89) and their select-fire counterparts (G3, HK53, MP5/MP5K) chambered in 7.62x51mm, 5.56x45mm and 9x19mm respectively

I used to shoot at a police range and was able to pick up tons of brass some days.

Easy to tell when the SWAT folks had been there with their MP5s.

Link to LaRue OBR brass thread.  OP was having trouble sizing, OBR brass.  Different sizing die cured his problem.

IMO, the only problem is they're harder to resize than a case fired in a normal chamber.  That brass is what made me retire my RCBS partner press and get a Lee Classic.  I had to get more leverage.

The CETMEs and HK 91 types typically mangle up the brass to the point that is is useless.

I have loaded some 9mm brass from an MP5. Worked fine but it wouldn't come clean in my case cleaner. After 4 hours in walnut media with polish it still had visible lines on it.

I don't keep any of it anymore. I know some guys at a range that sell the range brass as scrap. I bring them my rejects and they let me pick out calibers I need from their stuff.

Shuemann AET barrels for STI pistols also have fluted chambers.

years ago I had an HK91 and yeah, it mangled the brass pretty badly until I got an ejection port buffer for it.  Problem solved and they all reloaded just fine.

the Schuemann AET barrels in my S-V Infinity pistols do not have that feature...

Those are from a HK P7 pistol and a HK-93 pattern rifle. You can tell by the dent in the side of the casing on the 556 brass. It has very .... "positive" ejection.

The 9mm brass cleans right up. I reload mine all the time.

Port Buffer was the best, cheapest addition to my 91 and PTR91... I still get fluted brass, but I get many reloads out of each piece of brass.

I do segregate my brass... factory new and first two reloads go to non-fluted chambers... I'll move em over to fluted chambers after the 3rd firing.  Figure if I end up killing the brass by working it too much, i got at least 4 firings out of it total.

This is what my 9mm MP5'd brass looks like before stainless wet tumbling:

Same here. Only 9mm and .308
Grooves or not, it reloads well.

It is from a H&K gun or a clone.

Rifle and pistol brass reload just fine - even with deep groves in it.  The sizing die will cure all.

Not when the chamber cuts "rifling" into the brass, no, reloading does not cure all.

As with anything, OP, weigh the risks/benefits and decide if it is something you want to do.

Physically scarring brass does not bode well for structural integrity at 50k psi, even if brass has "spring" as an alloy.

Your fluted chamber of your firearm may or may not produce reloadable brass, mine does not.

Got 1000 cases of 10mm from someone on gunbroker that came from a fluted chamber.
SOME of it had splits running the length of the case that did NOT show up until AFTER sizing.

Local county Sheriff Dept has some 10mm HK sub guns and you see some brass at the fun shop infrequently .

What head stamp brass?

I have some SB .38spl that I end up culling 5 or so per 100 each reload.... they split on resizing so I have a bright light on my powder die spot (Dillon 550) o aid visual inspection.

It has an FC head stamp.
Lost about 30 cases after my first sizing.
Lost another 30 cases after the second round.
