| I cannot get my 700 sps .308 to shoot groups under 1 moa with my reloads, yet with factory it will shoot under .5 moa all day long. I have tried everything from 42 gr of varget to 44.5 grains with a oal of 2.8 with 168 A-max, every charge is weighted to within .1 gr. I am now going to try to load the rounds .02 off the lands but this takes my oal to 2.935. is this normal for remingtons to have this long of a throat? and how much do remingtons like bullets right of the lands? |

I rang a 4 inch gong at 400 yds a few Sundays ago using 42.5 gr.'s Varget behind a 168 gr HPBT and Lake City brass with Winchester primers. I was in the prone position using a sling not a bipod too!
Not really the answer you were looking for, but I was proud and wanted to tell someone!

| i was just shooting it last weekend with 43.5 grains under a 168 a max, cci br primer, and hornady case's, shot the top of a 2 liter at 500 yard ( where i was aiming, but i thought the bullet was going to hit 3 inches lower) i have the accuracy, just not the precision that i am looking for. |

It helped my sps tac allot to bed the action a truly float the barrel there supposed to be free floated but the houge stock would touch
I shoot 165gr partitions with 43 gr of RL15. It averages .7 and stays under moa out to 500 which is as long as my range goes. I don't have my load notes infront of me but I load them to just fit the mag well. So there pretty far off the lands. It shoots matchkings under .5. I tried loading those to a longer length that didn't fit the mag and it was more accurate farther back closer to mag length |

My SPS Tactical has a wicked long throat. Same situation as yours, ultimately I settled on a COAL 2.838...just a hair shorter than my magazine. Also, Varget and my gun hated each other. Tried a few alternates but settled on Winchester 748.
It's a tad more temp sensitive than Varget, but damn, the groups tightened right up when I started the load work-up. Ultimately ended up with 44.4gr under either 165gr. Gamekings or 168gr Matchkings. Same load same length for both. Gamekings tend to shoot a little better as they are shorter in the tip which gets the ogive that much closer to the rifling...but both are safely .5MOA loads. So my suggestion is try w748. Oh, and point of note, recently used the same load for a friend's Rem SPS, also did very well. Also, just as a tidbit, just worked up a load for varmits. 110gr. Vmax over 43.7gr H4895, seated to 2.7ish...whatever the Hornandy spec was that I don't have written down here. Lazers. Really light recoil, shot under .5MOA at 200m. (5 round groups.) Groundhog destroyers too. So my thought is if you don't find success with heavier weight bullets, you might start playing with lighter pills. |
