So I was at the range this morning and the fellow a few lanes down had what I could only assume was a KB with his PF-9. By the time I had figured out what had happend his buddy had gathered their things and zoomed out of there. When cleaning up I noticed this little fellow on the floor... possibly the culprit? Does anyone actually reload the Aluminum cases or could this be an oops from the factory?Found several pieces of his Keltec as well

I may be wrong, but I think CCI loads the aluminum Blazers with berdan primers to discourage people from reloading the empty casings. It could also be that, it fired out of battery. Hope he's okay.

Na I've gotten a couple CCI Alm. Cases that were Boxer primed, When I was just pass picking up at a range.  I was going though all the brass I picked up and found a couple CCI Alm cases.  In to the trash they went.

Hope the guy is ok.  To bad for a loss of a gun.

Saw a thread somewhere awhile back where somebody had a few boxes of blazer and some of the bullets got seated or pushed pretty deep.

I don't know how you couldn't notice something like that while loading mags, but don't assume anything.

Or some fool did try to reload aluminum cases?

who knows?

I'm not familiar with the Keltec, but is looks like wrong cal ammo, like a 9mm fired in a 40

Yeah, somethings not right there. That is massive case failure.

Firing a 9mm in a .40 chamber isn't that dramatic to the shooter though.

I didn't Take any pics of what looked like a mag release and slide release. Just FYI the Keltec pf9 is 9mm, not .40

Been a metric ton of boxer primer Blazer 9mm aluminum going around, same for 45acp, have not paid any attention to the 40..

I have handloaded the 9mm as an experiment.. 147gr lead, fired in my G-17, then loaded again and run through my M11-9 SMG w/ stainless barrel with SAMMI chamber.  Cases split 50% on first handload firing, then rest start to split on firing of 2nd handload.. I would only use them for last ditch ammo.. I do have a pile of them... the actual berdan Blazers were ending up inside aluminum cans, then mashed flat to not rattle when recycled.

I have before too.

But maybe aluminum acts differently than brass?

I thought a true KB was when the unsupported end exploded. I also thought it only happened in Glocks (j/k).

Seriously though, the OP said he found the case after the guys packed up and left. Who know if that was really the case that damaged the gun?

I think ALUMINUM CASE 9mm in a 40 gun might do that.

Further evidence: look at the primer: nice and round.  No sign of pressure on the primer at all.

So: HOW could there have been enough pressure to rupture the case like that?

Answer: there was NOTHING supporting the case wall as would be the case of a 9mm round in a .40 cal chamber.

FYI Keltec doesnt make it but there is an aftermarket .40 barrel for the pf11 and pf9's. I was wrong it was just the p11 that had a .40 barrel. a guy who gets a custom barrel made isn;t likely the same one who would shoot 9mm out of a .40.

On purpose...  They call them accidents because we didn't intend for them to happen...

That one doesn't look so bad.   After getting one of these:

No problem with the gun - there was a squib, but punched it out and off I went.

PS: The malfunction was a OUT OF BATTERY.
