How possible is it to use paper clips, cut to length, as replacement for SS media?

I trying to get around buying 5# media when I need 2 without shipping killing me.

Possible but probably not worth the effort of cutting them and certainly not worth it when the rust comes along.  Of course,

I'm guessing paper clips are not made of SS.

Man o man
Get a life
Even if you are chopping up the bosses paperclips on his time it would take a heck of a long time and they will rust like all get out.
If you are that hard up for cash get a part time job at a Burger joint and work a couple of hours-it would take you longer than that to cut the clips up

Go down to your local driveline shop or mechanic shop and ask if you can have some old u-joints.  Take the pins out of them.  They are SS needle bearings.
It's a little work, but they are FREE.  I got some heavy truck u-joints.  Work great.  Steel shot might work in a pinch as well.
I have some of the media on the link above and sometimes the little "saucer" looking media gets stuck in 9mm primer pockets.  Have to push them out with a paper clip.
Hope this helps.  Good luck
Amish out.

Pellets LLC is $6.00 per pound, and $10.00 shipping.  I bought 5 lbs, and paid a total of $40.00.  www.pelletsllc.com

I would buy a roll of stainless safety wire before messing with paper clips.  Cut 5 or 6 strands, line them up in the jaws of some side cutters, and start chopping.  And chopping.

People trying new things is how wet tumbling with SS media got started.

You do need to stick to SS however.

And chopping, and chopping, and chopping, and chopping.

It might work out ok, just make sure you chop to the same length.

I can't imagine doing all that work only to find that they all ended up exactly the right length to wedge across the case mouth.

Have you wet media folks considered a group buy?  It seems to me you could write your own spec for controlling the pin dimensions (within reason of course) and eliminate some of the lingering problems like magnetism, rusting, jammed up flash holes, and bridging.  The Rc 60, SS 440C needles out of U-joint needle bearings sound good, but it would take alot of old U-joints.

Your cost would mostly be your time!  If you have kids, put 'em to work.

An old paper shear could be set up with a stop block across the end with a two or three dozen wires laying on the surface held by two pieces of wood clamped with screws and maybe a loom to guide the end of the wires near the blade.

Y'all just don't want tiny stainless steel wires bad enough, yet!  Where there's a will, there's a way, and poor folks have to employ poor ways.
