This is my favorite cartridge to load for. You can do so many things with it. I've loaded everything from powderpuff target loads, to stout 300gr mags. I like to use 255gr LRFP for regular shooting, loaded with Trail boss. I also use Universal with a very accurate results.

Have fun with this cartridge, I get VERY nice groupings with a 200gr SWC, I'll have to get back to you on the powder charge I use.

I too love the LC
I use trail boss and unique in mine with 250gr rnfp hardcast. I dont have my data handy, but its a mid range load right out of lee manual with unique. Got the TB load from one of the 6 gun mags.   Both shoot great, unique load can be made little stout

You cannot go wrong with 8 gr Unique with a 255 gr round nose flat point bullet.  Gives about 800 fps with a 5 1/2" barrel.

The key to reloading 45LC is more about the firearm and not the load. If for a weaker action, be sure you are not using a hot load. Bigdifference  in the loads for a SAA and a Super Blackhawk.

Trail Boss is the powder for those old big bores.

I have had great results with Universal for 45 Colt "standard" loads.

The current edition of HANDLOADER magazine has an article on loading the 45 Colt.

My favorite combo was H4227 and a Hornady 250gr XTP.  Unfortunately, H4227 is no longer available.  As stated above, use data for the firearm you are loading for.  I shoot a S&W 25-9, which is on the weak side of the loading chart.  I never had a 4-legged creature walk away from it at 50 yards or less.  The XTP is just awesome for a hunting bullet.

What are you loading the .45Colt for?......there are separate load tables for  older Colts, S&W's etc...and for Modern Rugers, Freedom Arms, etc.

my favorite is 11.5 gr Blue Dot under a 250gr rnfp hardcast lead.

If lower pressure loads are your goal you might consider the Remington swaged hollow base 250 gr lrn bullet.
I load it with Titegroup and is a nice plinker round.
Hornady also sells a swaged bullet, in that weight, that I haven't used but others I know speak favourably of.

If the swaged Hornady 45 cal bullets are anything like the 38 and 32 swaged bullets, they will be GTG.

They are rated for 1000 fps loads. I get no leading at 800 fps in my loads.

This has been my standard load, only I prefer a semiwadcutter, since I started handloading in 1981.

+1  A great, and THE classic load.  It shoots great in my SAA, and from my 1873 Winchester will go right through a whitetail.
