I have never reloaded 45 before.  I have done 9mm and .38 successfully.  I was depriming the brass i had been saving up tonight to prepare for my first batch of 45 and noticed that my federal brass was primed with small pistol instead of large like everything else.  My question is should i prime these with small pistol and keep on chugging along or should i just seperate and chuck them?  I am mainly concerened that small primers might not work well with the powder i am using (unique) or that it will require a different load.

45ACP with small primers show no significant difference at all than large primers

Cool.  Are small primers common on 45?  I have never noticed them before but this is the first time i have deprimed any also.

The small primer actually work ok.   If you have a progressive press, it is just a pain in the neck, so I sort them out.  After 100 successfull years of large primer .45acp, someone had to throw a wrench in the works.   ***** A side note  Winchester has the NT (non Toxic) ammo with a small primer.  It is also a crimped primer and the flash hole is a lot larger.   I have reamed out crimped primer military brass before, but that oversized flash hole makes me think it would get too much back pressure, so I just pitch them.    Good Luck

all i use is the small primer including the winchester nt with no problems. i specifically bought the small primer  because when i got into 45 everything else i was loading

used small primers so it simplified loading for me. i have a 1000 or so large primer just sitting on the shelf that i don't use.

Small primers are used on the NT rounds.  According to the manufacturers I spoke with, it is because they could not get a satisfactory load work-up with large primers.  They recommend starting slightly lower than you normally would then work your way up.

Just save them until you get enough to screw with.

If the small primer is all you have, by all means load them up. I've got about 200 of them sitting around now that I'm just saving for a rainy day to load.

I save them and load them separately. They are not so fun on a progressive press.
