I wonder If you could make a bigger punch and make your LR primer cups into 5.5mm  .217 berdans no need for anvil. I might just have to try this

primers are the most dangerous and difficult part to make, less the brass as that requires a lot of overhead expenses for the machinery.
you can make them but those who have tried find their reliability to be inconsistent.

Look On amazon for a book by George Dmitrieff, "Poor Man's Primer Manual".

It may just help you out with SOME of the information you are seeking.

Yes Iknow the link doesn't work; it did on the now locked 9mm-.40cal bullets a week ago. Any body know how to find it again?  I think the part about carefully seating the primer with the caps in place would work for practice ammo.

I will unlock that thread tonight. OP and I have worked out the problem.

May be good to know in SHTF, but seriously - I have to draw the frugal line somewhere, and it's way before making primers.

Esp when you can get 1000 primers for like 30 bucks....

Maybe so. But most reloaders don't cast their own bullets either. And I have a lot of berdan brass and am getting damn tired of waiting for Powder valley or Graf's to get some more in stock.

I'll admit that I save a few thousand spent primers in case the cups and anvils are ever needed in an emergency.  But we'll be in a world of hurt at that point.

Until ScareBama I never hoarded components. During ScareBama and I guess we"re not through it yet.... Powder wasn't that hard to find, bullets got a little scarce.  Primers were of course in short supply and sometimes you just couldn't get them.

I now have a suit cased size Pelican case full of primers. I don't think one could hoard enough. I wait for sales and buy in bulk, have some 40,000 inventoried and 100,000 would be nice to have.

Stored in air and water tight Pelican case with incadescant packs they should keep forever. Also, if your having problems. MidwayUSA has a lot of instock primers.

This is why I have 10K rifle and 5K pistol primers packed away... along with brass, bullets and powder.

If you squirrel away a few primers, remember to store them safely.

This box has 1 1/2 inch sides and top and held together with a few finishing nails and paint. The hasp is for looks.
