Was about to put an order into Midway for powder and primers, when it said that the Hazmat fee would be $50.00. I was under the impression that the Hazmat fee was $25.00 for all hazardous materials, but it said that the fee's for powder and primers were separate. Is this true, or just a bug?

Midway often drop ship powder from the manufacturer so you get shafted on hazmat. I avoid them for reloading supplies for this reason.

But if it is just one fee on Powder Valley then why would it be two on Midway? It's a legal thing right? The reason I want to keep the order on Midway is because I have a list of other stuff there that I want to order.

This the drop shipping is what gets you, as well as slowly.  I recommend  Wideners first, then Powder Valley.

Midway only stocks Primers, and various vendors from Grafs, PVI, Western Powders do the drop shipping of powder for Midway.  Something to do with Zoning in Columbia, MO ? Prevents  Midway from having both primer and powder or so the story goes.
Each vendor has a haz mat contract that spells out what can and can not be shipped.  There are some cheaper vendors....If you live in an area serviced by Speedy Delivery, and can find a vendor in same area.like http://www.recobstargetshop.com/shipping.htm then the haz mat is only 12.50.

I live close to MidwayUSA and know the inner workings of Potterfield's place well.

Because of his proximity to Interstate 70 he cannot store powder at his facility. Zero gun powder is kept on site for sale. All powder bought from MidwayUSA is shippedn directly from manufacturer.

Primers are a different story. They are allowed to warehouse primers. So... when you order primers and powder at same time this is the reason for two seperate haz-mat fees.

I never buy powder from Midway. For primers I will make the short 5 minute drive and pick-up. (no haz-mat fee for customer pick up.)

For powder I drive 45 minutes to Graf & Sons. Graf's is a little higher on mail-order items but they are cheaper on shipping costs. They play a shell game by absorbing some shipping costs into the price of goods, but they store powder on site and can ship powder and primers in one box.

I don't order hazmat items from Midway or anyone else online.

The fee doesn't save me any money over the local gun shop.

Mike,

Saftey is an important aspect of it all, But you sure can mix these 2 classes into a single package, that is if you know what your doing and package/lable them correctly.

Everything Haz has to deal with not only DOT regulations, but the Carrier's regs as well.

Graf & Sons will ship both in same box too. As, I'm sure everyone else in the business of selling components will do like Wideners.

MidwayUSA's campus (huge) sits a stone's throw off I-70 and cannot store powder per federal regulations.

Powder Valley will ship both in the same box, and they have been doing so for years, one hazmat charge for both shipped in the same box.

On my meager 1 lb at a time budget, I give the business to my local gunshops.
