Spring break this week so I took the kids out to shoot some. Had a good time till I missed
I took my 458 SOCOM to test some loads and I was just shooting into air (not at an actual target) and about my 15th shot was a little low

All is not lost.  I have a Shooting Chrony now, and quite often feel like putting a bullet hole in it.

This is just an opportunity to by a better Chronograph.

Sorry for your mishap....I'm pretty sure I'm capable of exactly the same thing.

I don't own a Chronometergraph (oops..I knew it didn't look right) yet, but I've been eyeballing the Pacts with interest, because of their separation of computer and screen.....uh, for that very reason.

Separated, there is nothing expensive to shoot up front when the computer is next to you on the bench.....how good the Pacts work is a debated matter with people on each side...if I'm the jury...it's still out.

chronometer n. An exceptionally precise timepiece.

A chronograph (full name 'ballistic chronograph') is probably going to work better.

I'm considering purchasing a chronograph. Eventually I will anyways but I'm trying to decide what to spend my money on first. Casting equipment or a chrony? I'm a novice in the art of reloading so what do you all think? Also was it a good chronograph or are you going to upgrade? Would you recommend it? Must not have been that great because you shot it. I'm glad you had the humor to post it here so we could see and laugh WITH you

It was my first so I have nothing to compare it to. I will more than likely get the same one again Then I will have 2 of everything, except the part I shot. Glad to give everyone a good laugh for the day The first 5 seconds after I shot it I went Then I was I was kinda proud of the size of the hole it made.

Well if you are getting another then it must be decent. Any idea where I can get a good price on one?

Wow, you really whacked it good.

I shot mine with a mere .223 Rem round.  Put a nice neat hole through both ends, but not nearly so much metal trauma.

If it was working for you, might as well get it fixed.  If not, I guess you have a chance to buy a different chronograph.  The first option is cheaper, but the second option might be more appealing.

It was a .458  325g. Hornady FTX.I never had any issues with mine. I did consider contacting Chrony and see if I can get that part replaced. Depending on the cost I may go that route or I will just get a new one all together.

There are two kinds of chrony owners, those who have shot them and those that will!

Which is why its important to get a chrony that the brains are completely separate from the sky screens, if the brains are sitting on the shooting bench, they don't get shot up.

Makes for an interesting "story" around the campfire.  "Yeah, that 458 SOCOM is so bad ass, my chronograph disintegrated the instant I tried to get a reading".

I have seen this brought up a couple times. I assume mine is like that but not sure. Mine has the separate readout unit with a 15 ft. cord that connects to the part I shot.

I will only shoot through my chrono when shooting off a Lead Sled, once aligned to shoot straight through the screens it's pretty much impossible to shoot the thing, I also will not let anyone else shoot through it.

I accidently hit on of the metal rods last tiem at the range, it put a nice dent in the middle metal section.

I have shot my ced m2 chronograph, the good news is both ends are replaceable without the main box. All parts can be purchased separately.

I have seen that before and you wont be the last. I use a lazer bore sighter to set mine up. It works, I have never shot my Chrony. That's IMHO.

I shot my friend's Chrony once and learned two things.

1.  It's a good way to test a relationship

2.  You can return the shot Chrony to the company and get a replace for less than buying a new one:

Looks like I can replace just the part I shot for $60 + shipping.

While you're at it, spend the extra money and get the blue Master Chrony.

That way when your friend shoots it again, all he has to do is buy just the receiver unit for $49 and you're back up running.  Guess how I know?

Luckily, my friend stepped up so it's all better now, however, if anyone wants to use my chrony now, I shoot their weapon through it to test.  No one else shoots through my chrony anymore.

Also, note that I use soda straws instead of those metal rods and mark them at 4" and 6" high.  If you hit a steel rod, you'll likely break the plastic sensor housing but if you hit the straw, it just shears off.  I keep a few spare straws ready to go because, while I haven't hit my receiver, I have hit the straws before.

You spelled the wrong word correctly.

It happens.

Even the first one I built 30+ years ago had separate optical sensors from the electronics.

The one piece units are just a disaster waiting to happen.

I already hot two of the damned things.  Freaking Chronos are in the steam age - make something that works better and reduces  the chance of taking a hit - really, how hard can it be?

Which is why I went to the hardware store and bought wooden dowel material instead.  At least the wood will break without affecting the machine if you nick it.
