Die Adjustments

This sounds like a seating problem.
In that case, the crimp ring inside the seater die is contacting the case mouth. Put a case in the shell holder. Back the seater stem out, way out. Set the die up (without trying to seat a bullet) by running the die bocy down until contact with the case mouth is felt, then turn the die out one quarter turn, and lock it down. That gets the crimp ring clear of the case. Then adjust the seater stem to seat the bullet to the desired COAL. If a crimp is desired, add that in a separate step. Back the seater stem out so it is completely clear of the bullet, then run the die body down to add crimp. Seating plus crimping in one step is possible, but it's an unnecessary hassle and aggravation to set up. Whether to crimp .223 Rem ammunition is a decision everyone has to make for themselves, I don't use one as it's not necessary. |
