I am about to load a bunch of 30-06 for use in my M1 Garand.  I thought I could confirm my loads by reviewing a bunch of data online but haven't found very much data to compare.

Here's my load -

miscellaneous military brass, once fired, sized to 2.045" and trimmed to 2.485"
168 gr HPBT bullets from Widener's seated to 3.300" OAL
CCI no. 34 primers (mil-spec)
IMR 4895 powder, 47.0 gr
H 4895 powder, 47.5 gr

no crimp (bullets aren't cannelured)

Back when the M1 garand was still competitive in highpower rifle tornaments the standard 168 grain (SMK) load was 46.0 grains of IMR-4895.

Thanks, that's exactly why I wanted to ask about the loads.  I have only my hand written notes from the last load development session.  I found a similar recommendation on some other web sites, so I think I'll back down to 46 and see how they shoot.

I was surprised at the dearth of reload info for the 30-06 in Zuhkov''s rifle data base.  After I test out the load in my M1 I will submit it to him for addition to his database.

here's one link on the NRA loads

here's another from radomski at NJ highpower

I download mine as I don't like the recoil and even started using 155 nosler match to cut a little recoil.   I'm shooting vintage league shoots at 100 and 200 yards and I really don't need full milatary power for an across the course capability.

I've used loads from 45 to 47 grains of I4895 with WLR primers in a HXP case with 168's.  I've experimented up to 49 grains and found outstanding accuracy at a price of a fat lip on the stock side.  You might be happy somewhere between 46 and 47 grains of I4895.  IMR 4064 is accurate too, maybe even more than IMR4895 but it feels sharper in recoil to me.

Those look a little hot maybe.

47-47.5 grains of IMR 4895 is what I use for 150 grain bullets, with 168s I suspect you would be getting flattened primers.  Also H4895 is slightly faster than the IMR version, and loads with that powder are typically about .5 grains lighter, not heavier.

For 168s I always use the old High-power competators load of 46.0 grains of IMR 4064.

Thanks for the help, gentlelmen.  I already own the IMR and H 4895, so that's what I'm going to be using.  I used to use IMR 4064 for my 308 but I am totally out of that powder now.  It's okay, though, I already know the proper answer - work up your own load.

I remember now what happened and why I cannot find my chrono data on these from the last load development session - the chrono crapped out before I got to the M1 testing.  I now own a replacement chrono but haven't yet used it for M1 load testing.  It's funny how work, family, medical priorities always get in the way of play.
