| I have a Dillon Super Swager that I bought years ago and haven't used anytime recently. I received a bunch of once fired .45 brass that has about 20% crimped primers. I set up the Swager like I thought I used to but I can only get it to remove the crimp down to about half way down the pocket. I also can't find the instructions that came with it. Anybody help me out? Thanks |
| Thanks for that AR. It was helpful but didn't solve the problem. I just can't seem to get the swager rod deep enough into the pocket to do the job right. I turn the locator rod in as far as it will go but it's not enough. I've even noticed that I am warping the base enough that it will no longer fit into the shell holder. |

Did you miss this part? "For .45 ACP, use the bushing (not pictured) over the .30 caliber rod." from Page 5 aka " Swager Adapter 45ACP " at http://www.dillonprecision.com/content/p/9/pid/25290/catid/8/Super_Swage_600_parts |

It's not supposed to bottom out in the pocket. The crimp is only on the top edge. The swage is designed to NOT bottom out and only push back the edge of the pocket into a nice radius. If your deforming the brass, you've already gone to far. Back it out, then adjust it until you can seat the primers easily. ETA: it looks like your going to need that adapter also. |
| Are you just looking at the brass, or have you tried repriming it? As was mentioned earlier, the swager is not supposed to clear your primer pocket all the way down. You can easily see that because the nipple isn't as deep as a primer pocket. All it is supposed to do is expand the opening. If you are mashing brass into the pocket, you are adjusted way too far in. When your adjustment is set correctly, you can barely feel the swager working. |

Still a no go. It seems that all that is happening is that the metal from the crimp is getting scrunched down into the primer pocket rather than being removed. That's what it is supposed to do, reform the brass, not remove it. But it is also preventing the primer from seating all the way. I have tried seating a primer and it only goes in about half way. |

I've had some tough primer pockets in my day. Sometimes the swager bit just wouldn't fit. I had to ream them a bit with the Hornady primer pocket reamer then the Dillon swager would work. Just a thought. Sounds like you have the correct adapter for 45ACP http://media.midwayusa.com/ProductImages/Medium/176/176759.jpg Best $10 ever spent, no primer crimp stands a chance and no adjustment is ever needed, just get one and thank me later.
