Ok..so I've got some 200gr Hornady XTP hp bullets on the way and I'm wanting opinions on powder. Loading for 40 S&W
I have "Universal Clays" "unique" "Longshot" I've been unsing universal with good results for paper punchers but, want the XTP's for a hunting load.? Anything will help. And if there's any load data that I missed somewhere, please feel free to share |
|
I may be out of line and I haven't hunted in many years but it's my opinion that there isn't enough powder capacity in a .40 S&W case to push that heavy of a bullet (200 grains) to a velocity SAFELY enough to hunt anything but varmint size critters with.
You don't say WHAT you'd be hunting for but deer sized game with that cartridge/bullet combo (again it's only my opinion) has the very real potential to be inhumane at best. I'm sure somebody will be along with more experience than me to help you out though. |

out of the three I'd go with the longshot, check out hodgedon's website for load info.
in their yearly load book they list a max charge pushing an 180gr bullet to 1150fps out of a 4" barrel. I shoot a near max charge of longshot with a 180gr lswc through my xd service model; I haven't chrono'd it. it's accurate but recoil is fairly stout; also shoot the same load through a hipoint carbine with good results. |
|
Use one that fills >50% of the case so you can't get a double charge. I use AA#5 and AA#7. Load data is on their site http://www.accuratepowder.com/reloading.htm, start at 10% max and work up your loads |

Be it a 40 or 10mm I don't know, but bouth had good results. My intention is for a back up load to hog hunting and varmant calling. And a little fun with a bigger bullet in my Glock |

I started with Longshot for a .357 SIG load. Found it to be amazing accurate w/ 1400 fps using a min. charge. I have been testing it in 9mm & .40 S&W and have been pleased so far. I haven't decided yet,
but I may be moving from 231 to Longshot for those calibers. Not done testing yet, but so far, looks promising. (I still have a lot of 231 & not a lot of Longshot) The 231 will last forever if I use it only for .45 ACP!! I have not personally seen longshot in 8lb jugs, which is what I would prefer if I switch. Since you have it, I would definitely try it. I didn't know they made a 200gr bullet for use in 40 S&W. I have been using 180gr for that caliber. |

I have swithed to the 180gr XTP for deer hunting ,though I do still shoot the 200gr, the 180gr shoots a bit flatter out of my gun and from what my chrono tells me hits harder too. I use blue dot for the 10mm and I think in the hornady manual there is a blue dot load for 40SW with the 200gr XTP. |

Found em on Midwayusa and at a local reloading shop. My primary use will be for hog and varmant |

I'm fascinated with hunting with a pistol and/or revolver. After I know the 40 works then I switch over to 357. I thought about getting a 454 or S&W 500, but thats another dream |

I know glocks are either liked or hated, but I like mine I have 2 and I carry a G22 on duty |
