Is it normal for Universal Clays to be harder to measure in a powder measure?

I can't seem to get the powder measure to throw reliably in my Hornady Powder measure.  I am using the Hornady pistol rotor with the micrometer insert.  Trying to throw 4.4 grain charges to see what it would do, and it would vary between 4.3 at the low and 4.7 at the high.  Most where 4.4, but I would get 4.6 quite often and 4.2 on occasion.

I try to throw with a smooth calm movement up and down.  No taps or shakes.  Weighing each charge so there it isn't charge after charge.

Using a GS-1500 to weigh if that matters.

Did you settle the powder in the hopper before starting to set measure?

Best thing to make any metal powder measure operate smoother is paste wax.
Disassemble PM, coat all moving surfaces, let dry. Wipe off.
PM will be much smoother. The wax doesn't harm the powder like oil would.

OK, settling the powder,

Dump powder in measure. With your index finger, lightly tap on powder hopper.
Watch the powder settle down to a lower level.
Now throw about 5 charges, throwing them back into the hopper.

Powder is now settled.
Measure a throw, adjust PM. Throw 3 to 5 charges, throwing them back into the hopper.
Resettle the powder every time you change the adjustment.

A powder baffle will also help, Midway sells one (what I have in my Hornady), or make your own. How to at the top of the page.

Keep at it, the Hornady PM is capable of + or- .1 gr with flake powders, If your technique is good.
Practice is needed for a good technique. Good luck

I load 40 s&w and 45 acp using universal clays.  My lyman powder measure (with baffel) seems to throw it pretty accurately.  The only powders that really gave me problems were extruded rifle powders like varget.

I did settle the powder by tapping the powder hopper.  I probably threw 100 charges last night trying to get the thing to settle down.

I'll try the waxing the powder hopper.  Can I also wax the powder pan so the powder doesn't stick to it as much?

The Hornady powder measure comes with a baffle already.  I have used it the entire time.

So +/- .1gr would be 4.3-4.5 when I have it set to 4.4 if I have my technique down?

Might be static causing some powder to stick in the barrel or drop tube.  I often have that problem with flake powders and have learned to tap the side of the powder measure.

Yes.

I never tried waxing the powder pan.

When I have static issues, I wipe down the parts with a dryer sheet. This will work for the pan, it has for me.

If powder is sticking to the powder hopper, then wipe is down inside and out with a dryer sheet.

Might have to do this several times. Static can be stubborn to get rid of.

Used dryer sheets work ok, but I prefer new ones for static control.

When not in use, I fill the hopper full of dryer sheets, until my next loading session.
