| So my wife wants to shoot my Krag at the upcoming appleseed shoot. There were other options, ie. 20'' AR, but she insists she wants to shoot the krag. She's shot fine out to 100 yrds with my reloads, but will this rifle do 500 yrds? I believe that is the eventual course of fire for the Appleseed shoot. Anyone want to recommend/speculate on loads for the Krag that will stay under the max pressure and perform that far out? I'm thinking some 175grn Sierra Match Kings and some IMR 4064 maybe? I know that the bullet seems unconventional, but I have had good luck using jacketed spitzers, especially the 173 grn surplus match bullets. I'll look at my load books again, but can anybody comment from experience? |

Appleseed training is great, but most shooting is at 25 yards. Take a .22 or you will be sorry.
The longer range depends on the range they are using. Usually 400 to 500. I used my usual 168 grain .308 loads running 2600 fps. I wouldn't think you would need any more from the Krag. Enjoy a great day. |

My Appleseed was at the 50yd range next to the 1,000 yd range. All the school shooting was at 25yd.
I made rifleman the first day and there were several others the next day. We never shot past 25yds
eta: I drove 4.5 hours, hotel, etc hoping to finally shoot past 100yd (since I'd heard the same as you did). |

Out of about 45 people only about 8-10 people got to shoot the 600 yard range, it was based off shooting very small groups at the 25yard range. Like others have said a .22 rifle would be a much better choice. I shot about 400 rounds of .22lr and felt tired from all the shooting, and getting into the shooting positions. I did pick this up before I left http://a.imageshack.us/img576/8831/riflemanpatch.jpg Hmm, guess its not likely either of us will be shooting at 600 yrds. I don't even own a 22 outside an ar. |

I think most Appleseeds run a little different, depending on the people running it. A auto loader would be much easier to use for the shooting the targets. They have a saying that you should bring what you have. Meaning they dont really care what you shoot as long as you come and have a teachable attitude. Its a lot of fun and its cool your wife would want to go - have fun. |
