My 1999 vintage Dell pc will nolonger post pics. I want to get a new pc but seems there is always another pistol I want more than a new pc.
I have about 10 different types of hollow point bullets I have loaded and fired thru plastic jugs of water to relativly compare how they expand. I cannot post pics of them but I can say that Speer Gold Dot in .45 Auto, .357 magnum and even slow .38 Special are by far the best and most consistant at least thru water. The fancy and pricey Remington Golden Saber aren't that good and almost always lose their jackets. Do any of you have pics you can post of expaneded HPs of any brand in any caliber or weight? Thanks, I would appreciate that. -Vonbarky- BTW, I wanna get one of those new KelTec 30 round .22 Win Mag Rimfire pistols. |

Last summer I shot a bunch of water jugs with 9mm, .38/.357mag and .45 auto HP bullets but was rarely able to find the projectiles.
This year I got a cardboard box and stuffed 3 old cheap Walmart type winter coats in the box. I put 2 one gallon water jugs in front of the box. The thick coats stop the bullets everytime without damage to the bullets. It seems thick, puffy winter type coats slow down pistol bullets really fast. Have any of you tried something like to above with Remington Golden Saber pistol bullets? For as much as they cost, the fancy golden name and all the tout I thought they would perform like a premium HP. But, I have found them to perform the same as Remington green & white box HPs. Thanks |

it was a while ago when i did this testing, i did test the golden saber as well, and its reliability of expansion was close to that of the ranger-T's.
it wasnt a perfect test system, but it was what I had. I have an uncle that owns a watermelon farm, used the big ones that are about 13-14in around as my human analogue (fleshy, fibrous, and mostly water, kinda like us), had it backed up by 2x12 eight inches behind it to see how much power it had after going though the target. then I just lined the front of the melon with diff barriers, denim, heavy coats, and hollow cord door. shot taken at 10 yards. if I remember right, the golden sabers penetrated a bit much after going through the target. the Ranger-T's had just enough energy to dent the wood, but was laying on the ground in my box. if your shooting into the coats you wont see the bullets fully expand, cotton is famous for preventing expansion. if you just want to see bullet expansion, you build a wood box about 12X12 and 3 feet long, put your milk jug infront, and then fill the box with newspapers and soak em down. works great. its also how i now test expansion with my hunting loads, but I put the milk jug IN the box with about 4 inches of wet paper in front of it (for the thicker hide) |
