I have some old maxi-balls that have a good bit of oxidation on them, any way to remove?

Solder flux should work.

If you are going to shoot them with a cloth patch, shoot them as is.

I had dirty balls once (the lead kind) and scraped the white junk off with a knife.

Did a couple, scraping got old fast and the rest I remelted and recast.

Throw'em in a tumbler with crushed walnut shells for 30 minutes or so.

Last weekend I rotary tumbled some 90 grain .30 caliber half jacket bullets in corn cob to remove light oxidation.  Mostly to make them prettier.

Your options are abrasive (tumble it off) or solvent (dissolve it off) removal.  Most acids cause lead to form insoluble compounds, but sulfamic acid, sold as tile grout deglazer in Home Depot, does not.  I would try that if you don't want the abrasive route.  Of course, then you'll have a bucket of soluble lead salts to dispose of.  Best of luck.
