I have just started loading 9mm and I am using Power Pistol powder. I made up a few rounds to test using a rem 115gr JHP, so far they are accurate, clean and function well in my pistol. They also shoot well in my 9mm SBR, which is a first for that gun. The books I have list the following:
Lee 6.2gr@1186 6.7gr@1280 Lyman 5.9gr@1102 6.5gr@1212 I am using 6.3gr and it ran 1245 avg and showed no signs over pressure that I could see. Is this a good load or should I back it off a little? Thanks |

If you are not getting pressure signs, you are GTG.
Hornady 7 lists a max charge of 6.7 grs of Power Pistol with the Hornady XTP 115 gr JHP. I worked up to this load and it shoots great in my CZ 85. No pressure signs, but muzzle flash is noticeable. I like this load. I'm using Win cases, WSP and a OAL of 1.075. |

I always cringe when people just pick a load, especially the max and in this case above the max load listed without of making test loads starting from 10% under max to max. In your case the load works but it's probably on the border of being a max powered 9mm round and a 9mm +P round. The 9mm AR can take the extra pressure all day long I would be wary of shooting +P's exclusively in a pistol |

I thought max was 6.7 in the lee book and 6.5 in the Lyman book that i have. Min load was 6.2 and 5.9 respectively, am I reading these books wrong? |

I believe he's concerned that you didn't work up a load, for example: start at 5.9, and then work up on .1 or .2 grain increments. You did slowly work your load up, right? In any case, you're under the max load, and as long as there's no pressure signs, you're GTG. I've only tried 3 powders for 9mm, and so far power pistol is my favorite! |

Another resource you have is the recommendations of the powder manufacturer, Alliant.
Their web site shows a max load of 6.7g for power pistol. http://www.alliantpowder.com/reloaders/recipedetail.aspx?gtypeid=1&weight=115&shellid=23&bulletid=25 |
| I would back the load off because it's a maximum loading right now. What happens when it's 90 degrees out? Another reason, already mentioned, is shooting maximum loads through a firearm will wear it out sooner. I'd be looking for 1175 fps with your bullet and Power Pistol and call it a good load. That's plenty fast, typical of fullpower commercial loads. Will provide good functioning and probably good accuracy and not be the crap out of your gun. |
