I know this question comes up in various forms, and I know many have their own thoughts on it. I also know that with new products and prices changes, the "best bang for the buck" might shift from one product to another. All that said, here is what I'm looking for thoughts on: I've got a nice YHM AR-15. I'm thinking about building a second one for my fiance...a very target oriented upper on a basic two stage trigger lower. We are finally joining a proper gun club that is open 365 days, and has ranges going from 25 to 600 yards. I plan on shooting a lot this year. What I'm looking to reload, is what I would consider a "high-end plinking" round. We really can't afford .50 a shot projectiles, and being beginners (who both made Rifleman at an Appleseed!), we'd like to shoot a lot more of an accurate inexpensive round. What I'm currently have is 1000 Montana Gold 55gr .224, 1500 LC .223 brass, 8# of H322 and I have 3k of CCI #41. I think this will be a good plinking round with above average accuracy. Does this sound like a solid plan I should stick with, or is there a better bang for the buck/accuracy going these days? I'm hoping to put a bulk order in come April, so I'm asking now to plan ahead, and keep my eyes open for good deals. I'm open minded to powders, projectiles, etc, and I have both a Rockchucker and Pro2000 and all the gear I need to prep the brass. I'm just looking for inexpensive, unusually accurate, bulk rounds. EDIT TO ADD: I'm also on a list for a Cowan rest, and since we will be joining a 365 days a year club, I'm full on into developing rounds that are specific to each rifle we own, or will own. I just need to do it on a budget. |

Some of the cheaper HP's like the Speer 55 gr TNT and Sierra's 52 & 53 gr MK's are very accurate and are no where near the cost of the heavy OTM match bullets, I even had great accuracy from the Siera 55 gr GK which is a HP also and is very accurate.
Good deal on 55 gr M193 LC bullets 4K ETA: Stay away from the Armscor bullets, they aren't accurate at all. |

Just out of curiosity, what club did you join? Out in Moline?
I think you'll find that the Hornady FMJ's are about the best thing going for bulk, FMJ bullets as far as accuracy goes. Unfortunately, "inexpensive" and "unusually accurate" normally don't go hand-in-hand. |

Unfortunately, "inexpensive" and "unusually accurate" normally don't go hand-in-hand. I'm going to join Aurora Sportsman's Club come Mid-March. Which one is the one in Moline? I understand that inexpensive and unusually accurate typically don't go hand in hand, but there *has* to be a product that is at the top of the bulk-bang-for-buck-accuracy. That's what I'm looking for. |
| Ah, I didn't realize they finally got the 600 yard range done. I hope they have some highpower tourneys there. The one I was referring to is actually Milan, not Moline; I misspoke. There aren't too many 600-yard ranges in IL, so good for Aurora for getting that done. |
