| This reminds me of the old "revolver" rifle back in the day. Wiser shooters would not shoot it. Why? When the failing cylinder set off the other rounds, they would shoot out of the cylinder into the shooters left hand and arm ahead on the forward rest. Notice that one of the projectiles (right side) is missing. |

Yesterday www.accurateshooter.com posted an article about a recent KaBoom involving a single shot large caliber upper mounted on an AR15. It broke several of the shooters bones in his left hand and injured him elsewhere quite seriously. He had been having trouble closing the bolt on his reloads and after repeated slamming of the bolt the rifle fired out-of-battery.
That's my short take on it, read the article in depth for more info. |
| Thanks for the heads up BP. If that was an AR lower, it was a highly modified lower (there is no magazine well). I would say that is a bolt gun disguised to look like an AR. I am still trying to figure how his LH fingers got hurt. Maybe he was doing the Arlee Ermy style hold. Or, maybe it was the right side ejecta from the plasma, bullet pieces, and brass pieces that hit his left hand in a normal grip. |

There is a (now locked, but still there) thread in the .50 BMG Forum about it––Bohica upper, no one knows (so far) what happened. There are pics, oh and a second thread with "Bohica" in the title. |

Shrapnel cutting the case maybe? That could account for the intact bullet in one of the ruptured cases. ETA....Just noticed it was pushed forward. That's the only way I can see that happening, maybe it pushed the bullet out before the top of the cylinder let loose all the way on the other two. I hope the shooter didn't get hurt too badly if at all, that's a bad kaboom though. |

I bet the round on the right had already been fired. the second (left) ignited from pressure as it was ripped apart.
also looks like the cylinder didn't come into time/lock and maybe fired the bullet straight into the side of the barrel, never left the cylinder, and the pressure took the path(s) of least resistance. |
