What tool do you guys use to clean out the primer pocket and uniform the flash hole for match ammo?
A friend of mine had these hard wire brushes from RCBS, but it didn't look like they did too good of a job, so I wanted to see what would be better. |
| In my opinion, primer pockets don't need to be extremly clean, just get most of the soft crud out. But I believe you're looking for a primer pocket uniforming tool, and a flash hole deburring tool. Both are available from RCBS. The little brushes are just to clean, not to uniform. |

I use the Hornady tool on a RCBS handle. The bristles of the RCBS primer pocket brush will eventualy fray. I don't uniform flash holes cause I don't make "match" ammo, just great quality reloads RCBS increased the size of the bristles from what they used to use...because they frayed and became worthless. The new ones don't fray, but they also are rougher on the hole scratching them pretty good if you're not careful. The uniformer smooths the bottoms, but leaves any scratches on the sides of the pockets. Therefore it is wise to use a little care inserting and removing the tool so as not to scratch the sides which might cause gas leakage. Still, the RCBS bristle brush is more efficient than any other tool I've used...I prefer it...especially in the RCBS case prep machine (Trim Mate). |

Blasting and practice ammo I don't clean Primer Pockets. With precision loads using match bullets, I uniform the PP and debur the flashole with RCBS tools. Next time I load a case that had the PP uniformed the previous time, I use the uniformer again. It doesn't remove any more of the PP, just removes the crud. I no longer use the RCBS wire brushes. |
| I use the Hornady primer pocket reamer cutter head (Midway product # 253550) in my RCBS case prep station. It cleanes out most of the stuff, removes the military crimp. Will leave some black residue in the bottom of the primer pocket, but I do not have problem seating primers. |

I use the Sinclair uniformer chucked in a drill. It is a non-adjustable piece of solid carbide that will last you forever.

I use the RCBS brushes chucked in a rechargeable drill, when I really, really want to clean the carbon out of a primer pocket.
I also use a uniformer in the drill, but I use the Wilson tool. I also have a carbide Whitetail uniformer that I bought for cleaning some really tough carbon out of the LC National Match brass I have. The RCBS brush takes it out, but takes about twice or three times as long as in brass that fired more recently. |
| I've been using a Lee Primer Pocket Cleaner, Midway #467111, cost $2.09. I chuck it up an a small table top drill press, dedicated for reloading. Then, I use a small, very small, brush held in a pin vise and push it through the flash hole. This small brush is a dental implement, used to clean out between the teeth. I get two or three of these brushes from my friendly dentist at every check-up, to help with my "dental care" of course. |
