Is there any powder out there that can pull duel duty with 9mm and .223 target ammo?

That depends on what you mean by "target".

It is possible to load .223 Rem with some of the same powders used in pistol cartridges.  They will be low speed, running about 1800 fps, and they won't cycle the action of an AR.

However, I wouldn't recommend this for noobs.

I don't know what you have in mind.

But, FWIW (for us at home) there are Shotgun, Rifle, and Pistol Powders.  Each have their "sweet spot" and were created with a use/purpose in mind.  Yes, some may have been used in a dual purpose role.  But, do you really expect one powder to excel in both?

IMHO.............use what the book (reloading manual) says to use.

That being said...........perhaps you should open the book and see if there is a powder used in both the 9mm and .223/5.56 mm?

I doubt that you will find one powder to do both (but I could be wrong).  Then, even if you did...........will that one powder be GOOD for accuracy (or whatever else you have in mind as a criteria) in both?

Then, yes............under "special conditions".............I've seen guys doing "experiments" with _________ powder in a rifle.  And, I know that the same powder can be used in a 9mm.  But, the reason WHY I'm not mentioning the name of that powder is because...........I don't want the liability.  As I said.........."special conditions" and "experiments."

YOU want to "experiment."  That's up to YOU.

Aloha, Mark

I understand not wanting to say anything spacific. I was trying to find a cheap range powder. I have read in some places about Red Dot being used on both and might try something with it to see.

I wouldn't use Red Dot for either.

It would work in 9mm, but there are many better powder choices.

In 223, not a good choice at all if you want to shoot semi auto.

You will most likely need two powders.
Try Varget and Universal, or RL15 and Unique.

By all means, do not take my word for it.

READ THE BOOKS! or internet, plenty of good load data on Al Gores internet.

I guess I am sticking with my HS-6 and H4198. It was just a thought.
