I have some 75gr hornady HP (#2520) bullets I havent been able to find an accurate combo for yet. I have tried a range of varget loads from the hornady man., but nothing groups that good. I want to try some IMR 4831 or H4831 that I have on hand, but thats where my confusion starts. Hornady does not list any loads for powders with that slow of a burn rate. My sierra man. lists a load for their 75gr HP with the following ranges:
IMR 4831- 53.2-58.3 H4831- 52.9-59.7 I found one load on hodgson's site using hornady 75 gr v-max's and up to 62grs of H4831. Newb question, because I have always followed exectly out of my manuals. Are the sierra and hornady 75gr HP's the same, so I can load my hornday bullets using the powders listed for seirra's? If so, as I suspect, what charge should I start working up from? |

I am working up loads for the same bullet, but as mentioned above, IMR 4064 got the nod for most accurate 75 grain powder from Lyman. I plan on trying that and IMR 4350 as well.
There will be some difference between Sierra and Hornady V-Max 75-gr bullets, however because you will start low and work up you will be able to find a safe load because you have a range to work with that should cover both bullets nonetheless. Lyman lists H-4831 and the 75 grain (Sierra) bullet. Start is 53.0 grains @ 3105 fps and Max is 59.0 (compressed) @ 3559 fps. If you try IMR 4064 work up to 50.0 grains - - this powder gives more velocity than the slower powders like 4350 or 4831. If you try IMR 4350 work up to 56.0 grains |

Whereas you may be able to find a good shooting combo. Its possible that your rifle may not stabalize that light/short of a bullet. Most quarter bores are twisted for medium weight bullets. If you can't get the 75 grs to group, try stepping up to the 87 or 100 gr SPs. Your rifle may shoot them with less issues.

That is why I think the V-Max is the best bet in 75 grain bullets. It is a longer bullet than the Sierra, so I think that it would be the most likely to give the best accuracy results.
But as you mentioned, if the little bullets won't work, a person shouldn't hesitate to switch to 87-90 slugs. There is just something fascinating about those light bullets at warp speeds though... |

You hit it on the head with the last comment. I have some 100gr. loads worked up that shoot nice, but I want to find a 75gr one for varmints. Few things are as fun as shooting a light bullet at a fast rate. |
