Sorry to head over here for .458 data, but I have finished building my house and now have plenty of time for reloading and shooting. I want to reload .458 SOCOM rounds, but only have limited data. They changed their site, .458socomforums.com, a few times since over the last year or more that I've been away from shooting, and now after re-registering I can't get my account activated.
I know they had helacious spam issues with porn, etc. Hopefully they are up and running now, but I also know that there are a number of folks who were regularly on this board that also visited .458socomfurms as well. Help a brother out, anyone? Thanks in advance! I'm jonesin' to load some of the 330 gr custom lathe turned solid brass bullets, along with a few other goodies I've picked up. |
| Are you saying you can't get registered at 458socomforums? Or the site doesn't come up? Or that the load data isn't on there anymore? I know the site comes up, and I'm pretty sure the load data is on there. If you're having registering problems I'm not sure whats up. |

Thanks for the data. Had some of that, but other stuff is new to me.
I re-registered under a new name but cannot receive the activation email for some reason. Don't know why. You have to be registered to view, and since I spent $1,000 on a very custom upper, I want to get load data so I can play with it. Small frustation, but I'm sure it will get worked out in the near future. Marty is probably getting ready for SHOT and doesn't have much time for e-mail. |

Coldbore says that we should be switching to the new forum soon. But "soon" has lasted 3 or 4 months now so I'm not sure when thats going to happen. Once we switch to the new one we'll all have to re-register anyways. |

Oh Boy..........I think I found my go to load. 1 big hole at 25yd. to get a zero.
100yds.2in. using a holosight. I loaded 40.0grs. H4198 2.158 oal. .458FTX 325 grain. |

Just thought I'd give you guys one of my pet loads for my 458. Cases trim to 1.570. 38.4grs. IMR 4198, CCI 350 with a 300gr. Rem. JHP. OAL= 2.080. No crimp. Off my back porch railing, harris bi-pod, standing. 5 shots, 3/4" (one hole) @ 25 meters. Still working on a few more with the 325gr. FTX. Sorry, no pics right now. Don't know why people think the 458 kicks. Feels good to me.

Hornady .458 Socom I have both Hornady and Redding .458 dies both are qualtiy but the Hornady is easier on the bullet when seating, the Redding is a bit sharp and cuts into the jacket a bit making a ringed groove on the ogive. 100yds.2in. using a holosight.I loaded 40.0grs. H4198,2.158 oal. .458FTX 325 grain. I'm loading the Remington 405gr bullets seated so that the cannelure aligns with the case mouth.
My COL is just under 2.18". The case I just miked was at 2.175". They are charged with 35gr RL-7 and cycle fine with no signs of excess pressure. I have fired that load through the same brass about 4 times so far. Hornady 300gr JHP
34.5 gr H110 CCI 350 pr 2.005 oal group size.770" @100yds. |

THANKS for the load data!
I have been loading H4198 and CCI 350 primers. With my 500gr cast lead round nose gas check bullet I am up to 30 grains and getting about 1300 fps and with my 400gr bullet I am up to 35 grains and getting about 1600 fps. Function seems to be good, but I would like to push them a little faster and I am not sure what to expect as far as psi. Accuracy seems to be ok, but I do not have a scope mounted yet and I was going to see if my trigger was going to be good enough, but it leaves a lot to be desired, so I am just getting started and I have a lot more development work to do before hunting seasons. |

I was a member of the 458 socom forums and HATE that it is down but was relieved to see a fair amount of interest and info on here. I just loaded a single round up to those specs above and was concerned that the load might be a little compressed. Actually I loaded to a COL of 2.20" and still thought things were tight. The powder comes up to the shoulder/neck junction and at 2.2" the FTX is right at, actually a little beyond that point. I am starting with lower loads like a good boy, somewhere around 38.0 grains and will work up, but I just had to load one at those specs out of curiosity. Please post up some more loads or updated info on the 325 FTX from Hornady. Thanks |
