Is their a site that will list the burn rates of rifle powder? I am trying to find a substitute powder and the question is if I replace a powder with another that is close in burn rate would this be acceptable? I have looked over this site

and have not found what I am looking for. I know it is probably here.

Replace it how?? Just because the burn rate is similar does not mean they are the same density....meaning for example ones max load may be quite a but higher than the other.

Burn rate charts are approximations and do not hold across the board for all cartridges.

If you want to make a substitution, get a manual.  If you're in a bind, someone here can help with a substitute gunpowder.

Alliant, Hodgon, Nosler, Ramshot and others have data on line.  Hodgon lists data for Hodgon, Winchester, and IMR gunpowders.  You can find links in the Reloading Resources at the top of the forum.

Burn rate charts can usually be found in your reloading manual.

Note that they may not always be the same. (see AreoE's comments above).

Aloha, Mark

PS............additionally IMHO and for the sake of liability..............use only the data "as tested by the book."   To do otherwise, is taking a BIG RISK.

IF however, you have the equipment to "properly" test your loads.............then well, it's up to you.  But, in NO WAY is this a general GO AHEAD for the casual experimenter.

Since you asked..........as I said prior (shaking head from side to side)..........use the data found in your reloading manual.  Stay safe.

Aloha, Mark

If none of your Reloading Manuals have a burn rate chart, get the Lyman 49th.

www.varmintal.com  has a powder burn rate chart, also some other really neat stuff.  Of course, the obligatory.....never substitute any component from any data in any  load book.
