I have some small primers, pistol, rifle I don't know. I do know they are either CCi or Remington brand. I am not sure which is pistol and which are rifle. I hate to trash them. Is there a way I can tell which is small pistol and which are small rifle?

If a pistol primer were to be inadvertantly installed into a medium charge .223 Rem round what could happen?

Thanks Much

If Remington # 6 1/2 primers, risk of pierced primer if used in rifle.  In general, same risk out come if primers are intended for small pistol.
I asume that you are aware of the precautions needed & pressure signs to carefully look for if you use the primers
for rifle.  For safety precautions, best use for pistol loads.  Not worth injury or damage to experiment with rifle loads.

There is a certain amount of risk involved if using these in a pistol. If I did it, I would definitely use starting loads.

I've not found a way to separate small pistol and small rifle primers.

I would not use them in rifle loads; if they are pistol primers, rifle pressures could make a mess of your rifle.
Using small rifle primers in a light (starting) pistol load should be OK; the worst that can happen is that your pistol doesn't have enough oomph to ignite the primer.

I would trash them. When I had some, I took a 2 gal steel bucket and started a small fire in the bottom of it and one by one dropped them in the bucket. They popped off and then I dumped then in the trash. Never use a component that is a unknown. Is your life or others worth it? Thats IMHO.

i bought remy 6.5 by mistake. i left them on the bench then discovered a thread here about using in pistol loads. i'm using in 40 s&w. start w/start loads and i was gtg.
no other info offered or implied but i've shot 400-500 of them in an xd(supported barrel).

CCI will have a "3" leg anvil....  Remington primers I had (pistol I think) had "2" leg anvil...  Winchester typically color codes the disc between the anvil and compound in the cup..

At this time, delegate them to pistol use for blasting ammo, mild to mid-range loads and run with it.

Well how many primers do you have and did you get them from a friend or pulled rounds?

I guess I have about 75 mixed up primers. I think I'll just trash them.

Thanks Everyone

75 primers is about $2, so not a great loss.

You could have always put them on top of the bulb in a shadeless lamp and turned on the juice.  Fireworks in November.  Or, thrown them into that pesky neighbor's tailpipe.  I'm just sayin'.

If it were me I would save them for Hot Glue bullets (or the commercial platic bullets). The glue bullets won't care what they were originally intended for, I use them for 357 revolver loads. Fun to shoot in the basement when my wiofe isn't home.
