| After resizing my brass in both .223 and .308 the brass seems to stay in spec going by Dillons case length gauges however when i put them in my Lee case trimmer they still bottom out like there is extra brass to be cut. Should I trim them regardless or are they ok as long as they fit in the Dillon gauges without any overlap? Thanks |

Measure the gaged cases with a caliper. If they are .010" under max (or, the trim to length) then they are GTG. If not, then trim until they are. Out of curiosity, I would trim one of them with the Lee trimmer and then measure with a caliper. You objective is to be under the max case length, and ideally at the trim-to length. |

Thanks IIRC.............the LEE trimmer works by having a changeable spud screwed into the cutter. So, actually the length can be regulated by how deeply one will screws in (or out) the spud. Once you get it to where you want it..........you could use liquid loc tite to hold it there. Confirm your brass length, with a caliper. IF you don't have a caliper, the gauge will work. The end of the neck of your brass needs to be at or between the high and low cuts on the gauge, with the headstamp end sitting on a level table top. And, make sure that the case head is also resting on the table top, NOT stuck within the gauge. Don't ask me how I know. Aloha, Mark |

Maximum trim length like some previous posters have said is 1.760. Meaning, like previous poster advised you trim at 1.761. I trim at 1.759. Some of you might have caught my post stating I just started loading .223 this week, but I'd also remind some that I'm the guy who cleans primer pockets and case trims 45acp and have been doing so for a decade plus. So what I'm saying is... I don't stick any case under my powder die until I know it's right. period. SAAMI spec on MAXIMUM trim length is 1.760 and when calling Sierra and I have. They advise you trim like previous poster has stated at 1.750 and mic everytime before loading. Again trimming at 1.760. Reloading isn't rocket science but SAAMI is nothing to be messed with. There is some science involved in SAAMI's spec. Happy and SAFE reloading. ETA: nevermind..I'm going to have to swallow some of my own medicine here.. I need to get some glasses.. I thought you'd said they were at 1.775... after re-reading your fine.... I'm not.... off to the optometrist for me. |
