Im wondering is it ok to trim shorter than the Listed OAL buy about .02 of an inch??

0.020 shorter than the maximum length is okay for .223 Rem cases (I guess, I don't want mine that short).  I wouldn't use cases 0.020 shorter than the "trim to" length.

how come?  Seems they'd just have a bit of extra freebore, and so probably wouldn't be what you'd call match quality.  But I don't see a safety issue.

Just to express a general opinion here, less brass = less seal. Amoung other things the function of cartridge brass is to deform a little to seal preassure in the chamber.
