Anyone have experience with RCBS Small Base X-Dies for .223 Rem (5.56x45mm NATO)?
RCBS recommends that cases resized with Small Base dies not be used in bolt action rifles. Can anyone explain why? I use a Wilson case gauge and find that some cases that pass this gauge test are tight in my Rock River Arms Wilson- barreled Wylde Chamber. Puzzling. Apparently the Wilson case gause is not a sure-fire final gauge. |

SB dies are not needed for an AR, so why would they be needed for a bolt action? RCBS sells SB dies to people who "think" they need them. SB dies over work your brass for no reason. My theory is some people don't know how to properly adjust their FL dies, so they have chambering problems. So they think they need a die that will size the case more, so RCBS fills the desire for these people with their SB die. | That style case gage leaves a lot to be desired, but are much better than nothing. Knowing what you know now, simply resize to the low end of the case gage's measurement range. The gage will work fine for you if the rounds are flush with the bottom of that gage, rather than "somewhere in the middle" like the instructions recommend. |

Yep, size em down a little more. Bet a dollar to doughnuts that's a pretty tight chamber. My RRA Match gun's chamber is at SAAMI minimum using an RCBS precision mic. Therefore they have to be sized a couple thousandths below
"minimum". Set the die down a bit farther and test a few, if it ain't enough to reliably function, size em a little more. |
