I have never bought reloading supplies before.
Is $65 a good price for 1000 CCI #400 primers? What is a good price for 1000 bullets and powder? Just ball park pricing, of course. I am reloading .223/5.56 Thanks Dave |
| Cast your own....that's the only way to save a considerable amount of money by reloading. Some people don't reload to save, but to increase accuracy for match shooting..you'll find that your own bullets are better for precision shooting as well..a lee bullet mold is like $30 too...just sayin. |

Bullets: it depends on what you want - general plinking, accuracy, etc. Buying in bulk is the cheapest, but you really have to find a bullet you like (and your AR likes) before you buy in large quantities. I prefer Hornady 55gr FMJ for general use. I tried a box of 100 first. Powder: Most places locally have it for $20-21/lb. 1lb does not go far loading .223. Buying in bulk saves you money, but again, it is not a good idea to buy in bulk until you find a powder you like. Currently I am partial to BLC(2), mostly because I have not been able to get any H-335 (at a price I am willing to pay) to try. Thanks! I was pinted to a supplier in PA that has the primers for $23/1000. Not sure what they have in stock but he has the bullets and powder (H335) according to their website.
Will contact them today and see. i will start with 1000 CCI 400 Primers/Bullets (55gr Hornady) and 1-3 lbs of H335 powder and see what I get. Thanks again for the help. Dave |

Some folks do but they are not of much practible use for that caliber. Generally pistol caliber cast bullets are useable up to 1000 to 1200 fps which gives broad useage. Some brand barrels (Glock) are specifically designed for jacketed and not recomended for cast lead. In rifle use cast bullets are generally usefull up to 1800 to 1900fps which doesn't offer the level of power of a standard jacketed load.A cast bullet load in 30-06 can be deadly accurate and lots of fun but power will be off 1/3 to 1/2 of a jacketed load. 45/70 is actually best suited to cast loads in my opinion! Small fast calibers such as 5.56 lose a great percentage of their power when yu limit them to cast bullets at 1900fps and semis will not function |

There's goofballs out there that make some REALLY NICE wheel weight lead bullets for .223. I mean Nice looking bullets! I saw pics on another site and they looked good. I still find it absurd since bulk FMJs are not that expensive. And I see no need to fire a non jacketed bullet in my rifle. |

Holy cats batman.... $65 per 1K... dang that guys need run out of town for that kind of gouging.
I just snatched 5K from Powder Valley at $25.50 per 1K.... I questioned whether to do it or not but I always wanted to try some of the Wolf primers and they have them instock right now for the .223. Good luck with the reloading and keep in mind that 1 pound = 7000 grains. So depending on your loads you will get around 280 rounds per pound if your using 25 grains per load. (that's what I'm using for my Service Rifle match ammo) At that rate you will need 3.5 lbs of powder... so better get 4 lbs min. if you plan to punch out 1K. |

There's actually load data in the lyman manual for it, believe it or not. They must be gas checked and you can't load them very fast. A lot of the loads are in the 1800 fps range using handgun powders. There's some hotter loads up to 2500 fps. Never tried it, but I have to believe that leading would be an absolute frakkin' nightmare. |

I was just hoping that if they worked out, I would be getting me some of them there Hornby bullets
